Bell Jean Fulkerson (Allen) Wells, 93, of Lexington, widow of Harry Guthrie Bell, died Saturday, April 18, 2009 in her residence after a lengthy illness. Born June 26, 1915, in Paris, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Wood Allen and the late Betsy (Megibben) Ashbrook Allen. After completing studies at Paris High School in 1933, she graduated in 1937 with honors from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary and Chi Omega sorority. She began her career in business as a secretary for her husband and her father-in-law, J.W. Bell. In the 1970s and 1980s, she worked as an administrative assistant at the Florence-Crittenden Home of Lexington. She served on the board of directors of WLEX-TV, Inc., until 1999. A longtime listener to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, she was a supporter of the UK Opera Theatre Orchestra Research Fund, St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, and The Living Arts and Science Center. She was a regular participant in area Scottish, Square, Contra, and other folk dances. Survivors include two sons, William A. Bell, Monterey, and Thomas G. Bell (Susan Schweder), Midway; a grandson, Ashton A. Bell, Midway; and several nieces and nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. A sister, Betsy Ashbrook (Allen) Smith, is deceased. She bequeathed her body to the University of Kentucky Medical Research and Education Center. A commemorative memorial is planned for June 26, 2009, at the home of Tom and Susan Bell. Friends and family are welcome to call them at home for arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the above organizations, the Tyler Microbiology Lab at the University of Texas Health Center, Mycobacteria Clinical Trials, or the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Bethesda, Md. Busby Bessie (Miles) Busby, 75, of Georgetown, formerly of Versailles, died Friday April 17, 2009, at her home. She was the daughter of Dave and Sarah Miles of Ashland. She was a retired employee of Rand McNally/Quebecor World and a member of Bluegrass Baptist Church in Lexington. Survivors include three children, Nancy Marler (Robert), Georgetown, Karl Busby (Debbie), Versailles, and Gary Busby, Texas; three granddaughters, Delaine Cartwright (Marvin), Nicholasville, Melissa Gregory (Phillip), Versailles, and Elizabeth Burnette (Stephen), Frankfort; six great-grandchildren, Madeline Gregory, Mackenzie Gregory, Savannah Burnette, Dustin Burnette, Justin Cartwright, and Brandon Cartwright; two sisters, Polly Bell and Jenny Huddleston, Columbus, Ohio; and a brother, Clyde Miles, of Ashland. Burial was in Ashland in the Miles family cemetery. Conner Margaret "Peggy" Conner, 79, of Lexington, widow of Cecil Conner, died Saturday, April 11, 2009. A native of Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Byrd Jones. Survivors include a niece and caregiver, Robin Brown; an aunt; an uncle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Services were conducted Wednesday, April 15, at the O.L. Hughes & Sons Mortuary, Lexington. Burial was in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Dennis Vernon Ralph Dennis Sr., 81, of Lawrenceburg, husband of Norma Taylor Dennis, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his home after an illness. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was a 60 year member and past master of Beaver Creek Lodge #335, Order of the Eastern Star, Hamilton Chapter #293, Scottish Rite Bodies, Oleika Shrine, and served as past Grand Patron for the state of Kentucky. He served as magistrate of Anderson County and also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission. He attended Western High School until being drafted in the U.S. Army. In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by two sons, Ralph Dennis Jr. (Nancy), Lawrenceburg, and Jarel Dennis (Darlene), Versailles; two grandchildren, Denise Myers (James) and Vernon Ralph "Chip" Dennis III, both of Lawrenceburg. A daughter, Angela Denise Dennis Dalton; two brothers and four sisters, are deceased. Services were conducted Sunday, April 19, at Gash Memorial Chapel by Bro. Bobby Chesser and Bro. John McDaniels. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Guy, 41, of Lexington, died Sunday, April 12, 2009. He was the son of the late Ruth Emma Guy Crawford. Survivors include two sons, Devin Jones and Kalon Guy; two grandchildren, sisters, Kim Wright and Shenece Thomas; a brother, Brian Thomas; two uncles, Donald Guy and Arthur (Roberta) Guy; a special cousin, Arthur Wayne Guy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, April 16, at Evergreen Memory Gardens. O.L. Hughes & Sons Mortuary, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements. Nelson Jeffry Nelson, 43, of Frankfort, formerly of Midway, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, following a brief illness. Born July 9, 1965, he was the son of Joann Brunton and Michael Nelson. He was a graduate of Woodford County High School and received an associate of science degree in animal science from Anchorage (Alaska) Community College. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1984-1988. He worked at Fawn Leap Farm, then at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his children, Joshua, Jeremy, and Katie Nelson; a sister, Jean Kilbaine; a half-brother Joseph Hood. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Midway Presbyterian Church. Shipp, 82, of Versailles, widower of Nancy Flynn Shipp, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. Born May 10, 1926, in Versailles, he was the son of the late Clefford and Lavinia Shipp. He had been auto parts manager for the former LaGrew Motors in Lexington for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Liese (Harold) Coleman, Versailles, and Lynn McIntosh, Harrodsburg; a son, Frank L. (Susan) Shipp, Upperville, Va.; a sister, Bonnie (Tommy) Kay, Versailles; a brother, Hubert L. (Jane) Shipp, Versailles; a sister-in-law, Joyce (Troy) Agee, Lexington; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson. Services were conducted Tuesday, April 21, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, by the Rev. Cynthia Cain. Burial was in Rose Crest Cemetery. Casket bearers were Kevin Shipp, Wendell Shipp, Tony Morris, Jim Morris, Tom Kay, and Eric Humphreys. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass. Condolences may be made at www.clarkfuneralchapels.com. Turner Nellie Rea Turner, 83, of Cynthiana, wife of Louis W. Turner, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at the Harrison Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 25, 1926, in Bourbon County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest A. and Viola May Blackwell Henderson. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Robert Louis (Laverna Marie) Turner, Versailles, Wayne Douglas (Susan Young) Turner, Versailles, and Donald Keith (Kimberly Tipton) Turner, Georgetown; three daughters, Martha Jean (James) Hatfield, Carlisle, Charlotte Ann Beasley, Lexington, and Brenda Joyce (Teddy Reese) Kendall, Cynthiana; two sisters, Dorothy Rison, Independence, and Hattie Louise (Lewis Jack) Owens, Cynthiana; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home by the Rev. Larry Lee Jones. Burial will be in the Battle Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
