Fossitt

Mary Burgett Fossitt, 71, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Scarlet Oaks.

Born in Casey County, she was the daughter of Eddie and Essie Hafley Green.

Survivors include a son, Tommy (Amy) Burgett; two daughters, Linda (Clayton) Manley and Lisa Kinney, both of Versailles; three brothers, Earl, Curtis, and Ernie Green; four grandchildren, Miranda Kleman, Jennifer Renner, Nicholas Kinney, and Matthew Kinney; and a great-grandchild, Makayla Kleman. A son, Jimmy Burgett, is deceased.

Graveside services were conducted Monday, Aug. 10, at Rose Crest Cemetery, Versailles, by the Rev. John Brandon.

Goins

Louise Osborne Goins, 93, of Lexington, widow of Allen Goins, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at her home.

She was the daughter of Elijah A. and Sally Courtney Osborne.

Survivors include a sister, Adelaine Osborne McDaniel, Midway. Four brothers and three sisters are deceased.

Services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 9, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, Versailles, by the Rev. Heather McColl. Casket bearers were Bill Osborne, John W. McDaniel, Jim McDaniel, Ted Nuttle, Ann McDaniel, and Mike Holder.

Hackett

Jean Linn Morrison Hackett, 66, of Lexington, wife of Robert "Bob" Hackett and widow of Thomas H. Morrison, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1942, in Little Rock, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Col. Scott D. Linn, DDS (U.S. Army, Ret.) and Wava Bowman Linn. She attended the University of Florida and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. She completed her education at the University of Kentucky, worked for the College of Business and later joined the staff at Kentucky Educational Television as a development officer. She retired in 2002. She served on the board for the Ronald McDonald House and enjoyed various Bible studies, investment clubs and several bridge groups. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Versailles.

In addition to her husband of 14 years, she is survived by two sons, Thomas H. Morrison Jr. (Beth-Ann), North Palm Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey Scott Morrison (Valerie), Lexington; six grandchildren, Thomas, Andrew and Abigail, North Palm Beach Fla., and Jeffrey (Cole), Connor and Cameron, Lexington; three stepdaughters, Sherry Mertel, Greensboro, N.C., Karen Thomas of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and Lisa (Greg) Tuyn, Snyder, N.Y.; a brother, William Scott Linn (Karen), Melbourne, Fla.; six nephews, Robert, Craig, David, Jim, Stuart, and Tommy; and a niece, Genevieve. Her infant twin granddaughters, Jennifer Lauren Morrison and Elizabeth Megan Morrison, are deceased.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Clark Legacy Center, Nicholasville. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Andrews Anglican Church in Versailles.

Soard

Trey Soard, 27, a saddlebred horse trainer, husband of Barbara Soard, died Friday, July 31, 2009.

Born in Woodford County, he was the son of J.R. and Teresa Soard of Graham, Fla., formerly of Versailles.

Other survivors include a sister, Jessica Mitzel; a brother, Joshua Soard; a niece, Madison Mitzel; a nephew, Ty David Mitzel; his grandparents, Keith and Shirley Elliot, all of Florida, and his grandmother, Martha Soard, Versailles.

Services were conducted Monday, Aug. 3, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home in Versailles.

Ward

Karen Gallegly Ward, 68, of Lexington, wife of Richard C. Ward, died Thursday, Aug, 6, 2009, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tennessee.

Born Jan. 25, 1941, in Ann Arbor, Mich., she was the daughter of the late John and Dora Evelyn Flanagan Gallegly. She attended Georgetown College and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of PEO, was active in Bible study fellowship, sang in the church choir, had been a Sunday school teacher. She had taken up oil painting and had become an accomplished artist in recent years.

Survivors include two sons, John Ward (Julie), Hebron, and Jeffrey Ward (Yvette), Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Lauren Ward and Ryan Ward; a twin sister, Sharon Turkett (Ron), Lexington; a sister, Kay Jones (the Rev. Jim) Jones, Waterford, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Richard and Karen Ward will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert G. Baker. Interment will follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 13, at the church.

Ward

Richard C. Ward, 71, a prominent Lexington attorney and community leader, husband of Karen G. Ward, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tennessee.

Born Sept. 6, 1937, in Leslie County, he was the son of Hazel F. Ward of Lexington and the late Judge Don A. Ward. He spent his childhood in Hazard and graduated from Hazard High School. He graduated from Georgetown College in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. While in college he held the officer’s position of Number III in the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a member and officer in several educational organizations. He obtained his Juris Doctorate degree the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1964. While in law school he served as president of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He began practicing law in 1964 in Hazard with the law firm of Reeves, Barret & Cooper. In 1972 Craft, Barret, Haynes, & Ward was formed and he served as managing partner. In 1980, former Kentucky Gov. Bert T. Combs invited him to join Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, a firm being formed by Combs and others which became one of the largest law firms in the region. Since joining the Wyatt firm, his law practice continued to focus in the areas of mineral, energy, environmental regulations, litigation and commercial transactions. The National Mining Association once named him Coal Lawyer of the Year. Chambers U.S.A., a rating organization for lawyers, recognized him as a senior statesman. He was a past president of the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He also had taught energy law at the University of Kentucky College of Law. He was admitted to practice in Kentucky, the U.S. Federal District Court of Kentucky, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, the American Bar Association, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and, while in active practice, was a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Kentucky Academy of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Bar Association’s Law Office Management Section, Litigation Section, Natural Resources Section, and Alternative Dispute Section. He had also served as chairman of the Kentucky Bar Association Natural Resource Section and Senior Lawyers Section. At his death, Mr. Ward was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, was a long time member of the Lexington Rotary Club, was active in Bible study fellowship, and was a member of the Georgetown College board of trustees. His wife of 49 years, Karen, died on Thursday, Aug. 6.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, John Ward (Julie), Hebron, and Jeffrey Ward (Yvette), Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Lauren Ward and Ryan Ward; three brothers, Don F. Ward, Evansville, Ind., Sam M. Ward, Louisville, and J. Steve Ward, Versailles, along with their spouses; and several nephews and nieces.

Services for Richard and Karen Ward will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert G. Baker. Interment will follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 13, at the church.

Ward

Lucretia Epperson Ward, 83 of Midway, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009.

Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Emory and May Linda King Epperson. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Versailles, where she was a member of the 55+Gang. She was the former owner of Wheel & Axle Service and was a past president of the Lexington Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was most recently employed by Tree Top Landscaping.

Survivors include a son, John (Carol) Ward, Midway; a stepdaughter, Debbie (Wayne) Faulconer, Lexington; four granddaughters, Marjorie Corral, Lisa Ward, Alison Coy, and Lindsey Faulconer; a grandson, Brooks (Mariah) Falconer; six great-grandchildren, John, Tia, Tanya, Floyd, Theresa, and Shaun; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kevan and Olivia.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 11, also at the New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. William Marcum, Dr. Wesley Noss and the Rev. Rick Ralston. Interment was in Rose Crest Cemetery in Versailles. Casket bearers were Jack Clark, Brian Dingee, Wayne Faulconer, Aaron Logan, Bobby Murphy, and Doug Vescio. Honorary bearers were the ladies of her Tapestries of Hope Sunday school class. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, was in charge of arrangements.
