Chapman

Lucy Ware Chapman, 99, of Frankfort, widow of Morris W. Chapman, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at her daughter’s home.

Born Nov. 16, 1909, in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Krille Hamilton Ware and Lucy Ferguson Coons Ware. She graduated from University High in Lexington and received a B.A. degree in English and library science and a M.A. degree in library science from the University of Kentucky. While at UK, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a librarian at Centre College, Danville, and later director of information and loan in the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives, Frankfort, until her retirement in 1974. She was a long-term member of the Pollyanna Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church, Frankfort. She was a charter member of the Kentucky Genealogical Society, a member of the Kentucky Historical Society, Susannah Hart Shelby Chapter of the DAR, and the Women’s Club of Frankfort. She had a lifelong interest in genealogy and was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy C. Watkins (Dick), Frankfort; two granddaughters, Beth W. McLemore (Kent), Suffolk, Va., and Ginger M. Watkins, Lexington; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Chloe Jeffers. Two brothers, Lester and Clifton Ware, are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Aug. 17, at the First Baptist Church, Frankfort, by Dr. David Hinson. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Casket bearers were Lester Carroll Ware, Carroll Darnaby Ware, Mark Ware, Robert Chapman, David Nicol Chapman, Richard Chapman, and Gordon Rodgers III. Honorary bearers were Emma Quire, Jewel Durrett, Gene Rose, Pat King and members of the Pollyanna Sunday school class.

Memorials are suggested to Mission Frankfort of the First Baptist Church, 201 St. Clair Street, Frankfort, KY 40601 or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Phelps

Bruce A. Phelps, 81, of South Shore, husband of Thelma Phelps, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009.

He was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Van Lear. He was a retired salesman for Commonwealth Life Insurance Company, and a member of the First Christian Church, South Shore, where he was a longtime song leader and Sunday school teacher. He was in the Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1949, stationed Furstenfeldbrück Air Base in Germany.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Bruce Phelps III (Janet), Virginia Beach, Va., and Wes Phelps (Judge Mary Jane Wilhoit Phelps), Versailles; two stepdaughters, Sherri (Tony) Love, Ashland, and Tammy (Joe) Morris, Catlettsburg; two sisters, Marthalene Preston, Paintsville, and Ernestine Blair, Memphis, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brian, Laura Jane and Christopher Phelps, Gabby, Chelsea and Sadie Morris and T.J. Love.

Services were conducted Friday, Aug. 14, at the First Christian Church in South Shore. The Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore was in charge of arrangements.

Reed

Marie Reed, 82, formerly of Versailles, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Frankfort.

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Dawson and Rosa Gray Grimes.

Survivors include two great-nieces, Lisa Bowman, Versailles, and Emma Jane Semones Cummins, Florida; two great nephews, Jeff and Philip Semones, both of Versailles, and several great-great-nieces and nephews, one in particular who helped take care of her, Jennifer Beasley Stone. A son, Dallas Emerson, is deceased.

Graveside services were conducted at the Versailles Cemetery by the Rev. Estill Everman.

 

Smith

Dr. C. R. "Pete" Smith, 86, of Winchester, husband of Josephine S. Smith, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009.

Born in Irvine, he was the son of Clifton Radcliff and Beatrice Baker Smith. He was a graduate of Cumberland College, Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry for 48 years in Winchester and was a land developer of Stoney Brook, Stonecrest, and Fort Estill subdivisions and a farmer. He served in the 25th Tank Battalion in the Rhineland and Central Europe in World War II and was a colonel with 33 years of service in the Army Reserve, 810th Convalescent Unit. He had served on the Clark Regional Medical Center Board, was a member of the committee to plan the Winchester Library, a member of the Winchester and Kentucky Dental Society and a charter member and president of the Jaycees. He also received the Master Conservationist Award. He was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by a son, Rick (Suzy) Smith; two daughters, Lynn (Porter) Roberts, Winchester, and Debbie (Miller) Hoffman, Mt. Sterling; eight grandchildren, Shawn and Nikki Smith, Dallas, Texas, Rex and Janna Smith and Rich Smith, Louisville, Ty and Stefan Hendrickson, Lexington, and Morgan Roberts, Susan and Michael Keffer, Mason Hoffman, and Mary Jo Hoffman, Mt. Sterling; four great-grandchildren, Damon and Dillon Smith, Dallas, Texas, and Reagan and Clay Smith, Winchester; a brother, Charles (Audrey) Smith, Versailles; and a sister, Pat Klicker, Louisville; and several nieces and nephews and their families. A son, Stephen R. Smith, and a sister, Jeanette Peyton, are deceased.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Scobee Funeral Home by the Rev. Jeffery Sames.

Donations may be made to the First Christian Church Renovation Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.

 

Todd

Johnny Howard Todd, 65, of Versailles, widower of Gloria E. Todd, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington.

Born in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Samuel Owen and Frances Wiram Todd. He was a member of Lafayette Nazarene Church and had served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two daughters, Trish Norton and Anna Todd; two son, Jim Clemons and Johnny Hamilton Todd; three grandchildren, Alyssa and Madison Todd and Lafe "John John" Norton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Mary Lillian Todd and Katherine Marie Todd Thompson; and three brothers, Samuel Owen Todd Jr., Willie Owen Todd, and James Hampton Todd, are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Aug. 17, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. David McCracken.

Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Foundation.

Tucker

Linda Tucker, 64, of Versailles, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009.

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of Everett and Dorothy Littrell Tucker. She was a member of Glen’s Creek Baptist Church, the Woodford County Woman’s Club and the Bluegrass Comunity Hospital Auxiliary, and was most recently employed by Georgetown Dental.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by three sons, Troy, Khristian, and Jason McDannold; four grandchildren, Shelby, Ann, and Lauren McDannold and Logan Lewis.

Services were conducted Monday, Aug. 17, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by Fr. Alan Sutherland and Bro. Jim Allen. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Wiley

Sylvia Wiley, 93, widower of Leslie Buster Wiley, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Cambridge Place in Lexington.

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late James and Lena Shelton.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Rick (Kim) Hudson, Tim (Judy) Hudson, and Cindy, Kim, and Robert Jankowski; and numerous great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Barbara Troxell and Peggy Jankowski, and a son, Leslie Wiley Jr., are deceased.

Services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 15, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. John Jessup. Interment followed in the Versailles Cemetery.
