  Mollie Elizabeth McClain, 83, of Versailles, widow of Ted McClain, died Saturday Jan. 7, 2006, at the Northpoint Healthcare Center in Lexington.

Born Nov. 24, 1922, in Bourbon County, she was the daughter of the late William and Willie Mae Matthews Hunter. She was a member of the Glen’s Creek Baptist Church and had worked at Rand McNally and Bel-Air Florist, both in Versailles.

Survivors include a daughter, Nila Ruth McClain, Versailles; a son, Gary Russell McClain, Frankfort; a sister, Rose Dean; three brothers, Charles, Mac, and Billy Hunter, all of Versailles; three grandchildren, Angela Richardson, Alabama, and Emily Wash and Wesley McClain, both of Frankfort; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Kerr and Matthew McClain, both of Frankfort.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by the Rev. Ken Underwood. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were Bill Turner, Wesley McClain, Randy Brackett, Jerry Willis, Danny Richardson, and Tom “Chalk” Stapleton.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

   Edith Hensley Merritt, 89, of Danville, formerly of Tollesboro, widow of Chelsea Merritt, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 1, 1917, in Sibert, she was the daughter of the late James Madison Hensley and Alsy Jarvis Hensley. She was a graduate of Clay County High School in 1933. She earned her bachelor of science degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1938, her master’s degree from the University of Kentucky, and her Rank 1 from Morehead State University. She taught home economics in Tollesboro for 34 years, retiring in 1974. She was a sponsor to three FHA state officers and supervising teacher for Morehead State University. She was a member of D.A.R., the Retired Teachers Association, and the A.A.U.W., and a member of Horsecreek Baptist†Church.

Survivors include three children, Vicki Eby, Kissimmee, Fla., Chelsea Claude Merritt, Palatka, Fla., and Valli Harrison, Danville; five grandchildren, Chuck Eby, Joeseph Merritt, Hilary Plat, Drew Stuart, and Zach Harrison; a great-grandson, Joseph Andrew Merritt; and a sister, Cora Ella Cooke, Midway. A sister and five brothers are deceased.

Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 7, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro.



  Mildred W. Pennie, 76, of Midway, widow of Robert Franklin Pennie Jr. died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center.

Born May 1, 1929, in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Washington and Ellen Lark Robinson. She was a nurse’s assistant for 22 years for the VA Medical Center in Lexington. She was a member of the Midway Second Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda P. Davis, Versailles; and four sons, Michael Wendell Pennie, Lexington, Richard Lynn Pennie, Lexington, Isaac W. Pennie, Tennessee, and Stanley Pennie, Midway. Four sons, Robert “Bo” Pennie, Marshall Pennie, Charles Pennie, and Steve Pennie; and a brother, Charles Washington, are deceased.

Services were conducted Friday, Jan. 6, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, Versailles. Burial was in the Midway Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mrs. Pennie’s grandsons.

  Alvin C. Washburn, 77, of 447 Duell Drive, widower of Edna Washburn, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Hospice Care Center, Lexington.

Born at Bethlehem in Henry County, he was the son of the late Eddie and Daisy Adler Washburn. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include three children, Dennise Washburn, Versailles, Eddie Washburn, Salvisa, and Darrell Washburn, of Cape Coral, Fla.; three grandchildren, Joseph Washburn, Brittany Washburn, and Josh Washburn; three sisters, Edith Washburn, Newcastle, Flossie Washburn, Louisville, and Annie Tingle, LaGrange; and a brother, Raymond Washburn, Henry County.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 12, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
