Fishback

Betsy Buchanan Fishback, 58, of Woodford County, wife of William Davis Fishback Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, of breast cancer.

Born in Valley Forge, Pa., she was the daughter of Kathleen Kern Buchanan and the late William Cooper Buchanan. She graduated from The Shipley School and Sweet Briar College, where she was president of the Riding Council. She, with Anne Bozarth, started the equine program at Midway College in 1979. She later coached the University of Kentucky’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Riding Team and taught horseback riding lessons at the family farm, Trackside. Eventually she retired from her teaching career to help her daughters achieve their equestrian goals. Her interests included the preservation of land and hunter/jumper horse shows. She served as a board member and DC of the Keeneland Pony Club, was a board member and past president of the Pisgah Historical District, a board member for Masterson Equestrian Trust Foundation, a board member and at one-time the director of the Kentucky Hunter Jumper Association, the director of community relations for the Kentucky Horse Shows held at the Kentucky Horse Park, and in the summer of 2007 was invited to participate in the United States Equestrian Federation Summit for Collegiate Riding. In recent years she was heavily involved with the creation of SPEAKS, "Supporting and Promoting Equine Awareness in Kentucky’s Schools," and Puissance Alliance, which helps promote horses and the hunter/jumper show horse industry in Kentucky. In 2005 she received the Lynn Williams Award at the ASPCA Midwest Regionals and in 2006 the Edna Lytle Trophy at the USEF Pony Finals.

In addition to her mother and her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Leslie Fishback Cutchins (Chip), Virginia Beach, Va., and Sarah Davis Fishback, Versailles; two grandchildren, Cooper Anne Cutchins and Cecil Vaughan Cutchins III, Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Kathleen "Winkie" Buchanan Motley (Hugh) and Deborah Ann Buchanan, Keswick, Va.; and a niece, Sheila Camp Motley, Keswick, Va.

A private graveside service was conducted Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Pisgah Cemetery.

Hancock

Don Heywood Hancock, 50, of Midway, husband of Brenda Reed Hancock, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the Bluegrass Community Hospital in Versailles.

Born in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Joseph Tilton Sr. and Fannie Jean Pruitt Hancock. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Adanne Hancock Bagby, Lexington; a twin brother, Ben Hancock, Midway; and two nieces, Mary Hancock Bagby and Ellen Rardin Bagby, both of Lexington. A brother, Joseph Tilton Hancock Jr., is deceased.

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home.

Jones

Carl Thomas "Papaw" Jones, 81, of Lexington, husband of Juanita Jones, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at the V.A. Hospital.

Born in Waco, he was the son of the late William and Stella Turpin Jones. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a retired carpenter with Smith Haggard Lumber Company for 43 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, the Rev. Carl Everett (Joan) Jones, Versailles, and Phil (Donna) Jones and David (Sandy) Jones, both of Lexington; a brother, Russell Jones, Richmond; a sister, Geneva Mobley, Dublin, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Six brothers are deceased.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Main Street. Burial was in the Flatwoods Cemetery, Waco.

 

Kirk

Clarence E. Kirk, 76, of Lexington, husband of Carol Kirk, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009.

Born July 17, 1932, in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Richard William and Margaret Zova Griffin Kirk. He was a supervisor at the Duplicating Service of the University of Kentucky.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Clarice Kirk Lee, Georgia; a son, Hugh Kirk, Georgia; four grandchildren; and a sister, Shelia Maples, Lexington.

Services were conducted Wednesday Jan. 21, at the Rose Crest Cemetery by John Jessup. Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, was in charge of arrangements.

Lewis

Kenneth A. Lewis, 84, widower of Gladys Carter Lewis, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Frankfort.

A member of the Pinckard Baptist Church, he was retired from Kuhlman Electric and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie (Jerry Thomas) Sutherland, Lawrenceburg; four sons, Kenny A. Lewis, Ronnie (Shirley) Lewis, and Rickie Lee Lewis, all of Versailles, and Donald (Bobbi Jo) Lewis, Lawrenceburg; six grandchildren, Melissa (Rick) Curry, Willena Lewis, Kirby Sutherland, Kasey Sutherland, Matthew B. Lewis, and Alana Lewis; six great-grandchildren, Paige Curry, Stephen Curry, Kayla Sutherland, Landon Hyatt, Kaden Sutherland, and Kennedi Ann-Thomas Sutherland.

Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Doug Simpson. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were his sons and grandsons. Honorary bearers were deacons of Pinckard Baptist Church.

Maples

Winfield "Buddy" Maples Jr., 43, of Lexington, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at his residence.

Born July 28, 1965, in Jeanette, Pa., he was the son of Winfield and Shelia Kirk Maples. He was a cabinet maker with Custom Kreations and was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was president of the Central Kentucky Computer Society.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Karen Maples, Lexington, Jennifer (Barry) Collins, Lexington, and Zova (Marty) Rothchild, Tampa, Fla., four nieces; and a nephew.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, Versailles, by Pastor David Head and Pastor David Stokes. Burial was in Rose Crest Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jerry Huff, Bill Horine, Josh Landrum, Mark Pennington, Samuel Maples Jr., and Barry Collins. Honorary bearer was Spencer Collins.

 

Poynter

Amber Dawn Poynter, 27, of Lexington, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at the University of Kentucky A.B. Chandler Medical Center.

Born Jan. 23, 1981, in Frankfort, she grew up in Frankfort and later lived in Versailles and Lexington. She was an employee of McDonald’s on Versailles Road in Lexington and formerly worked at McDonald’s in Versailles.

Survivors include her fiancé, DeShawn Kean, Lexington; her mother, Holly Barmann (Robert) Cairell, Lawrenceburg; her father, Billy Gene Poynter, Waddy; three children, Jacob, Cassie, and Demitrik Kean, all of Lexington; her maternal grandmother, Betty Barmann, Lexington; her paternal grandmother, Betty Poynter, Frankfort; a sister, Kelly (Eric) Padgett, Lexington; a brother, Bobby (Lori) Cairell, Lexington; a niece, Allison Padgett, Lexington; and several cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg. Services will be private. She will be cremated following services.

Redmon

Truman Coyle Redmon, 92, of Woodford County, widow of Curtis Redmon, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Grace Truman Collins Coyle and was a member of the Troy Presbyterian Church. She was educated at the Nonesuch School. Her mother died when she was 13, and she left school to help raise her younger brother, John, and take care of the household. She lived in the "big house" at Nonesuch and helped care for her family until the death of her husband. She was active in her church and in her community and was well known throughout Woodford County and beyond. She was known for her flamboyant "red" trademark and fashioned red hats before they became culturally popular. She had been an active member of the Woodford County Senior Citizens, was active in the "Kitchen Band," was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was a Kentucky Colonel, was a Sunday school teacher, and member of the advisory board of Community Education.

Survivors include her children, Fay (Jack) Lee, Versailles, Marlene (J.B.) Hawkins, Lawrenceburg, Sandy (Olena) Redmon, Versailles, and Randy (Nancy) Redmon, Mercer County; 10 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including John Edward Coyle of Versailles. Two sisters, Catherine Coyle Jacobs, Mary Lillan "Minnie" Potts, and a brother, John Coyle, are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Jan. 19, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. David Duggan and the Rev. Ben Lenhart. Interment was in the Versailles Cemetery. Casket bearers were Donnie Paul, Vodis Thompson, Billie Gregory, Web Morrison, Tony Wilhoit, John E. Coyle, Dr. William Foley, and Clifford Bradley. Honorary bearers were Buddy Egbert, Randall Berger, Gary Curd, Terry Withers, Kevin Wilson, Carl Weber, Bobby Moore, Ben Wilson, Rick Coffee, Roger Patterson, Lewis Bannister, and Jay Buffin.
