Brown

Edward Brown, 62, of Jeffersonville, husband of Mary Gibson Brown, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, in Jeffersonville.

Born in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Floyd and Christine Brown. He was a farmer and attended the Holiness church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Genevieve Sandlin, Booneville, Ralph Reed and Janet Bowen, both of Jeffersonville, and April Brooks, of Bath County; three sisters, Minnie Isbell, Frenchburg, and Nannie Deatherage and Helen Agee, both of Midway; a brother, Floyd Brown Jr., Midway; and six grandchildren.

Services were conducted Monday, Jan. 5, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Buddy Puckett. Interment was in the Midway Cemetery. Casket bearers were Thomas Isbell, Tony Isbell, Danny Isbell, Billy Turner, Terry Agee, Timmy Agee, and Kenny Agee.

Hopewell

William Roy Hopewell, 68, of Versailles, husband of Barbara Hopewell, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009.

He was the son of the late J.C. Hopewell.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Tammy, Tracey, and James Hopewell; three stepchildren, Edith, Judy, and Robert Ohair; three brothers, Tommy, Billy, and Paul Hopewell; a granddaughter, Jayme Hopewell; five step-grandchildren, David, Glenn, Jennifer, Christopher, and J.C. Strange; and a grandson, Ayden Hopewell.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Salvisa Cemetery next to Ebenezer Baptist Church. Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, is in charge of arrangements.

Neeley

Harry Lee Neeley, 70, of Lawrenceburg, formerly of Versailles, husband of Jennifer Little Neeley, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center, Lexington.

Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late David and Minnie Hazelwood Neeley. He was a Baptist and a retired farmer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Debbie Lee (Lorenzo) Perez and Amanda G. Little, Richmond, and Ruth Ann (Tony) Kincaid, Mary Lou Todd, and Amy Marie Little, all of Lawrenceburg; three sons, Joe (Cynthia) Neeley, Richmond, William (Janetta) Neeley, Campbellsville, and Adam (Crystal) Neeley, Midway; a sister, Betty (Ed) Roberts, Cleveland, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Ed Nichols. Interment was in Rose Crest Cemetery. Casket bearers were Adam Neeley, William Neeley, Juan Perez, Timmy Florian, Tony Kincaid, Rob Maggard, and Austin Murphy. Honorary bearers were Buddy Way, Gary Noe, and Lorenzo Perez.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Oliver

Timothy J. Oliver, 71, of Frankfort, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at his home after a long illness.

Born May 23, 1937, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late George W. and Dorothy Louise Zinn Oliver. He was former organist and choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Versailles, and later at Midway Presbyterian Church, In his career, he had served several other Central Kentucky churches including the Church of the Ascension in Frankfort and the Versailles Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Anglican Musicians.

Survivors include several cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at St. John’s Episcopal Church by Fr. Alan Sutherland. A reception will follow services. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Soward

Ann Preston Phelps Soward, 75, of Lexington, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at her home.

Born July 13, 1933, she was a lifelong resident of Lexington. She retired from her position as secretary-treasurer of G.F. Vaughan Tobacco Company after more than 45 years of service.

Survivors include a sister, Patricia Phelps Beshears, Arlington, Texas; four children, Patricia L. Sowards (John), Lexington, L. Matthew Sowards (Carolyn), Midway, Kathryn A. Sowards (Grant), Syracuse, N.Y., and M. Scott Sowards (Renee), Winter Garden, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Bernard Howard, Michael Sowards, Matthew Sowards, Robert Neal, Candace Neal, Aniston Middleton, Davis Reeher; a great-granddaughter, Whitney Howard; a nephew, Preston Twohey; and a niece, Allison Twohey.

Services were conducted Friday, Jan. 2, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery.

Swarner

Betty L. Swarner, 73, of Versailles, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, widow of Charles E. Swarner Jr., died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008.

Born in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late James and Geneva Helton Dusina.

Survivors include two sons, Wes A. (Lisa) Swarner, Versailles, and Keith E. (Virginia) Swarner, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Two brothers, Condie and Kenneth Dusina, are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Jan. 5, at Dayton Memorial Park, Dayton, Ohio. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Turner

Ryan Michael Turner, infant son of Mike and Kelly Portwood Turner, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the University of Kentucky A.B. Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Josie and Riley Turner; a brother, Jacob Turner; his paternal grandmother, Sandra Turner, Versailles; his paternal grandfather, Tommy Turner, Texas; his paternal great-grandparents, Barbara and Donnie Tennill; his maternal grandparents, Eddie and Connie Portwood, Midway; and his maternal great-grandfather, Armon Portwood, Midway. His maternal grandmother, Patsy Portwood, is deceased.

Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Midway Cemetery by the Rev. Randy Nation. Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the UK Neo Natal ICU Unit.

Williams

Ruby Carter Williams, 56, of Lexington, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, after a lengthy illness.

Born April 12, 1952, in Versailles, she was the daughter of the late William "Bill" and Marie Carter and was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marseya Williams and Sha-Ron Williams; a sister, Mary Alice Wilson; four grandchildren; a brother- in-law; a niece; two great -nieces; two great-nephews; six aunts; three uncles; and numerous cousins.

Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Main Street Baptist Church. Smith and Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
