Boggs Bruce Stewart Boggs, 51 of Asheville, N.C., died Monday, June 1, 2009, of massive heart failure at his home. Born in Durham, N.C., he was the son of Jim Boggs and Gail Waldeck. He graduated from Woodford County High School, where he was a state champion in wrestling. He also lived in Virginia and Oregon, most recently returning to North Carolina to be near family. He graduated summa cum laude in 1979 with a BA in sociology and anthropology from Transylvania University, then received an MS in rural sociology at the University of Kentucky in 1983. His career was in economic development and conservation leadership. He received the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service while at the Center for Improving Mountain Living at Western Carolina University and was with Rural Development Initiatives in Oregon and The Nature Conservancy. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Gavin; two brothers, Brian and Boyd; and a sister, Beth Buckler. Eaves Mary Louise Sutherland Eaves, 89, widow of John Owen Eaves, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Taylor Manor Nursing Home. Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Pearl Yowell Sutherland. She was a member of Glens Creek Baptist Church and worked as a ward clerk for over 32 years at Woodford Memorial Hospital. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, June 11, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by Dr. Ken Underwood. Interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. Edmondson Elmer Wilgus "Wig" Edmondson, 94, of Lawrenceburg, widower of Irene Tindall Edmondson, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at his residence. Born Sept. 23, 1914, in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Ethel Proctor Edmondson Brown and Francis M. Edmondson. He was a farmer, and a lifetime member, deacon, and trustee of Glensboro Christian Church, where he and his wife served as church custodians for many years. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving 36 months in the European front. He was also a member of the former Glensboro Ruritan Club. Survivors include a daughter, Marna E. (Bill) Bollinger, Lawrenceburg; two grandchildren, Megan Bollinger (Matthew) Spaulding and Will Bollinger, both of Lawrenceburg; and two brothers, Gene Edmondson, Salvisa, and Marion Edmondson, Versailles. Guest book at www.ritchieandpeach.com. Reynolds Janey Elizabeth Hungate Reynolds, 87, of Nicholasville, widow of Albert Reynolds, died Saturday, June 6, 2009. She was the daughter of the late D. B. and Jennie Dearinger Hungate and was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church and taught Sunday school at Community Missionary Church. Survivors include three children, Donna Lange, Lexington, Linda (Dea) Rhinehimer, Wilmore, and Davis Reynolds, Nicholasville; six grandchildren, Jeff (Michelle) Rhinehimer, Chris (Renee) Lange, Billy Lange, Kelly (Craig) Wilson, James (Rebecca) Reynolds, and Patrick Reynolds; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bertha Raider, Ida Woodson, and Hazel Pulliam, and numerous other family members. Roberts, 85, of Lexington, husband of Elizabeth "Libby" Phillips Roberts, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009. A native of Estill County, he was the son of the late Cora Hoskins Roberts. He received a BA degree from the University of Kentucky in 1949, where he served as president of the ATO Fraternity. He received a direct field commission in World War II and retired as a major from the U.S. Army Artillery Division. He was for many years associated with Phillips Shoe Company, after which he entered the field of residential construction. He served as president of the Lexington Jaycees and was awarded a lifetime membership; received the Outstanding Young Man of Fayette County award in 1957. He was a member of the homebuilders association and served on its board of directors for 15 years; served over 15 years as chairman of the Fayette County Police and Fireman’s Board; and was active in the First Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and elder, with participation in Stephen Ministry and several outreach committees. He was a former member of the Lexington Country Club, Keeneland Club and Thoroughbred Club of America. In addition to his wife of almost 60 years, he is survived by a daughter, Anne Davis Montgomery, Lexington; a son, T. Alan Roberts, Denver, Colo.; a granddaughter, Madeline Lynn Montgomery, Lexington; a grandson, Hunter Davis Roberts, Versailles; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Annabel Roberts Vore, Xenia, Ohio; and two brothers, J. Hartman Roberts and Rex W. Roberts, are deceased. Services were conducted Monday, June 8, in the Lexington Cemetery. W.R. Simms Robert M. Simms, 86, of Cynthiana, husband of Frances S. Simms, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Edgemont Healthcare. Born July 24, 1922, in Harrison County, he was the son of the late Dan and Frances Harris Simms. He was a retired manager at J. J. Newberry’s and a World War II Army veteran, receiving a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Cynthiana Baptist Church and the VFW. In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by a son, Douglas Simms, Lexington; two daughters, Debbie (Rick) Wade, Versailles, and Mary Beth (Bill) McNutt, Cynthiana; two sisters, Marjorie Holbrook, Ohio, and Georgia Moore, Cynthiana; and two grandchildren, Patrick McNutt and Taylor Wade. Three brothers, Harvey D. Simms, Tommy Simms, and Harold Simms; and a sister, Helen Rice, are deceased. Services were conducted Monday, June 8, at Ware Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Spivey. Smith Geoff Smith, 68, of Versailles, a sculptor whose career spanned four decades, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at his home in Versailles. Born June 5, 1940, he worked in a variety of media, including steel, stone, wood and bronze. His work has been exhibited, purchased and commissioned for private collections, public exhibitions, major corporations and art institutions throughout the country. During his career, he lived and had studios for many years in Vermont, Virginia, Maine, and Kentucky. Mr. Smith was commissioned to create a large-scale steel sculpture to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge and was the recipient of three NEA grants for Art in Public Places. In addition to many private collections, his work is displayed at the Portland (Maine) International Jetport, the Portland Museum of Art, and in the collections of Bennington College and the University of Vermont. In Lexington his piece "Gyroscopic" will be displayed in the Distillery District on Manchester Street. After graduating from high school, Mr. Smith spent two years working as a merchant seaman, after which he began studies in philosophy and English literature at the University of Vermont, receiving a B.A. in 1968 and completing the course work for a master’s degree the following year. He discovered his profession and lifelong passion when he entered a ceramic studio at the University of Vermont. He went on to take advanced courses in sculpture, ceramic sculpture and design. He became a prolific sculptor whose work was distinguished by variety of both materials and forms. Diagnosed with brain cancer in the summer of 2008, he continued working until only a few weeks before his death. His work was represented in Kentucky by the Ann Tower Gallery in Lexington and Gallery Hertz in Louisville; and in Maine at the Jameson Gallery in Portland and the Turtle Gallery on Deer Isle. He and his wife, Teresa Lynch, had a home and studio on Deer Isle in addition to their Versailles residence. In addition to his work, his many interests included music, particularly opera and jazz, travel in Italy, horse racing and literature. "Mr. Smith’s talent, energy and unfettered enthusiasm made him a large presence in the lives of the many people he touched," said close friend Jacalyn Carfagno. "He was a devoted friend who maintained close ties over decades." In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Mark Smith, and an uncle, Chester Smith, both of Philadelphia, Pa. Terwilliger Herbert Warren Terwilliger, 81, of Midway, husband of Mary E. Terwilliger, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Ft. Thomas. Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was the son of the late Lee H. and Ada Marion Rainhart Terwilliger. He was an honors graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He had retired from IBM after 40 years, where his last position was that of senior project engineer in the Chemical Products Development Services. He had several patents and developments, including a commission by IBM to work on the first heart-lung bypass machine for the University of Kentucky. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was an Eagle Scout and later Boy Scout troop leader, and served as a volunteer for numerous organizations. A devout Methodist, he was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and former member of Centenary United Methodist Church, both in Lexington, and had volunteered and served on many church committees. He had served for over 20 years on the Midway City Council, had been a board member of the American Water Company in Lexington, was a former member and past president of the Midway Lions Club, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, the Woodford County Library at the Midway branch, and was one of the original founders and volunteer for the Woodford County Recycling Project. He helped with Meals on Wheels, had been a youth counselor at Centenary UMC, and was active with the Parent Teachers Association. In addition to his wife of over 60 years, he is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Anita (John) Campbell, Lexington, and Paula Ann (Chris) Kuhnen, Edgewood; a brother, Lee William Terwilliger Jr., New York; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Wednesday, June 10, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Carl Townsend and the Rev. Lowell Langefield. Entombment was at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. Thompson Ralph Gilbert Thompson Sr., 72, of Midway, husband of Aletha Verleen Lay Thompson, died Sunday, June 7, 2009. Born July 25, 1936, a native of Midway and Paynes Depot, he was the son of the late Virgile and Nancy Jane Wilson Thompson. He was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church, a retired truck driver with Overnite Transportation Company, a former Midway police officer and a former member of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son Ralph Gilbert (Bonnie) Thompson Jr., Georgetown; two daughters, Shelia Deniece (Butch) Armstrong, Midway, and Terry Lynn (Ron) Jenkins, Frankfort; four granddaughters, Virginia Lee Thompson, Ashley Purcivall, Aletha Marie Agee, and Stacey Verleen Lykins; a grandson, Joshua Ryan Jenkins; two great-grandsons, Nathan Thomas and Matthew Edward Agee; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Paige Agee; a brother, Floyd Edward Thompson; a sister, Geraldine "Cricket" Walling; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Three brothers, Howard Ray, Stanley Earl, and Wilburn Lee Thompson; and a sister, Eva Rose Breeding, are deceased. Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Will and Georgia Scearce Smothers. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and had retired from Texas Instruments. Survivors include five daughters, Wanda (Henry) Johnson, Lucinda Young, LaDonna (Willis) Polk, and Kimberly Young, all of Versailles, and Ellen (Rudolph) Seth, Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. A son, Lendall Charles Young Jr.; three sisters; four brothers; and a granddaughter, Adrian Polk, are deceased. Services were conducted Monday, June 8, at First Baptist Church by the Rev.
