Bunnell Robert Samuel Bunnell Jr., 90, of Lexington, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at his residence. Born in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Pinkie Wilhoite and Robert Samuel Bunnell Sr. He was a retired painter and decorator and a member of Parkway Baptist Church. Survivors include three nieces, Patricia Giles, Versailles, Marilyn (Sam) Craig, Lexington, and Sharon (Donald) Brush, Morehead; and a nephew, Gary Wiley, Cocoa, Fla. A sister, Virginia Wiley, and a brother, Arthur Bunnell, are deceased. A private graveside service will be held in the Lexington Cemetery. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Main Street, Lexington, is in charge of arrangements. Byrd Myrtle "NaNa" Byrd, of Lexington, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Gus and Matt Byrd. Survivors include three daughters, Grace (James) Thompson, Betty Gill, and Latasha Riley; a brother, Johnny (Jenny) Byrd; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, June 24, at Evergreen Memory Gardens. O.L. Hughes & Sons Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Clayborne Nannie B. Caise Clayborne, 89, of Lexington, widow of Charles D. Clayborne Sr., died Thursday, June 18, 2009. A native of Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late James R. Sr. and Mattie Feck Caise. Survivors include three children, Charles D. Jr. (Beverly), Lexington, Terry Wayne (Jane), St. Petersburg, Fla., and Lowell Thomas (Peggy), Lexington; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters, James R. Jr. (Alberta), Virginia Mae Shelby, Joseph William (Nannie), Elizabeth Seal Morton, and Helen Teresa Beatty; and, numerous other relatives. Eight siblings, including her identical twin sister, Mattie Arnold, are deceased. Services were conducted Monday, June 22, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Lexington. O. L. Hughes & Sons Mortuary, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements. Courtney Garrett Powell Courtney Jr., 69, of Frankfort, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in Lexington. Born Nov. 22, 1939, in Frankfort he was the son of the late Garrett P. and Mildred Whisman Courtney Jr. He was an Eagle Scout, graduated in 1957 from Elkhorn High School, and was an NRA and UAW member. He retired from General Motors as an electrician and was a member of Thornhill Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Hockensmith and Nancy Courtney, both of Frankfort, and Pam Courtney of Lawrenceburg; two sons, Gary Scott Courtney and David "Crockett" Courtney, both of Frankfort; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Sandifer, Frankfort. A daughter, Lawava Courtney, is deceased. Services were conducted Friday, June 19, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by Bro. Billy Perkins. DePriest John Carlos DePriest, 76, of Versailles, husband of Marilyn DePriest, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, Born on Jan. 16, 1933, he was the son of the late Carl and Velva DePriest. He served as pastor of the Burdine Freewill Baptist Church, Burdine, for 21 years. In 1981, he founded the Burdine Christian School, where he served as principal. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in the Korean War. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his children, Cindy Sanders, Paul DePriest, Debbie Lucas, Mindy Kiser, and Melanie Caudill; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Stallard; three brothers, Jack DePriest, Sam DePriest, and Joe DePriest; and numerous other family members. Services were conducted Saturday, June 13, at Burdine Freewill Baptist Church. Carty Funeral Home, Jenkins, was in charge of arrangements. Hunter Mattie J. Hunter, 98, of Versailles, widow of Leslie Hunter, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at Bluegrass Care and Rehabilitation Center in Lexington. Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Nora Crittenden Johnson. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member at St. Paul AME Church in Versailles. She was a retired employee of Southwestern Tobacco Company Redrier. Survivors include a daughter, the Rev. Sarah E. Spaulding, Lexington; a grandson; and a great-grandson. A brother, David Johnson, is deceased. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by Chaplain Rachele Snellgrove. Lance Larry Ray Lance, 65, of Versailles, husband of Gina Lance, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Born Oct. 1, 1943, in Centralia, Ill., he was the son of Beulah Lance of Versailles and the late Raymond Lance. He was retired from Quantrell Cadillac in Lexington, was a Kentucky Colonel and a U.S. Air Force veteran. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Mark (Jessica) Lance and Jeremy Lance, both of Georgia; a sister, Vickey (Lloyd) Smith, Versailles; two grandsons, Kyle and Zachary Lance; a granddaughter, Shelby Lance; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins in the United States and Peru. Services were conducted Monday, June 22, at Camp Nelson National Cemetery by Fr. Dan Noll. Casket bearers were Lloyd Lee Smith, Steven Smith, Robert Fitzgerald, Devert Owens, Chad Hambrick, and Darwin Turpin. Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, was in charge of arrangements. Marshall, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center. Born in Harrison County, she was the daughter of the late Taylor and Sally Rudd England. She was a member of the Arlington Christian Church, Lexington, and Monday Club at Bell House. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Wayne) Wells, Lexington; two grandchildren, Tiffany (Bo) Morgan, Midway, and Brandon (Lena) Wells, Valdosta, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren, Alex Morgan, Brady Wells, and Shelby Morgan. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, June 25, at Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be after noon today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Arlington Christian Church or Hospice of the Bluegrass. Shields J. Paul Shields Jr., 89, of Lexington, widower of Frances Margaret Hinton, died Sunday, June 21, 2009. Born Oct. 9, 1919, on Pauls Mill Lane in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Jodie Paul and Carrie Cecil Shields. He was a veteran, officer and pilot of the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a member and former session member of the Troy Presbyterian Church. He was a proprietor of service stations on Winchester Road and Versailles Road, but farming was his true vocation. Survivors include two sons, John Paul (Ginger) and Richard (Dede); four grandchildren, Carrie Ann (Billy), Amy Douglas Eddie (Christopher), John Paul II, (Jessica), and Benjamin Brannick (Mandy); and five great-grandchildren, RJ, Cordelia, Malorea, Oscar, and Audrey. Services were conducted Wednesday, June 24, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, by the Rev. David Duggan. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery.
