Verna Alice Howard Horton, 94, widow of Fritz Horton, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center, Corbin.
Born Nov. 9, 1916, in Elliott County, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Amanda Jane Ellington Howard.
Survivors include a son, Billy J. Horton (Barbara); a daughter, Patsy Lou Cox (Blaine); four grandchildren, Debra Lynn Hudson, Thomas Joel Howard, Cheryl Renee Welchel, and Jenny Calhoun; six great-grandchildren, Brittany Nicole McGavic, Kelsea Noel Soto, Amye Renae O’Quinn, Zachary Daniel Welchel, Hannah Elisabeth Welchel, and SSGT David Lanier; four great-great-grandchildren, Makiyah Anne Noelle Butler, Xaylen Lanier, Ethan Lanier, and Tristan Lanier; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A brother, James Curtis Howard; two sisters, Violet Litton and Velda Litton; a son, Lowell Thomas Horton; and a daughter, Berdena Lee Howard, are deceased.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, June 30, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home, Sandy Hook, by Bro. Scott Litton. Burial will be in the Elliott County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Josephine Barnes "Jo" Johnson, 95, of Versailles, widow of Lester Johnson, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the St. Joseph Hospital.
A Woodford County native, she was the daughter of the late Bowen and Betty Singleton Barnes. She was a member of the Forks of the Elkhorn Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Jean (John) McClain, Versailles; a son, Doug (Ethelwyn) Matthews, Versailles; a sister, Ellen Brophey, Pulaski, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Mark (Gwen) Matthews, Lake Oswego, Ore., Mary Beth (Dr. Kevin) Elvidge, Versailles, Melaynie (Dave) Summers, Versailles, Meleah (Ricardo) Rubio, Austin, Texas, Denise (Walker) Hatton, Vincennes, Ind., Dena (Gary) Coffey, Versailles, Karen (Glenn) Boens, Lexington, Alan (Gloria Jean) McClain, Versailles, Sandra (Wade) Fathergill, Hodgenville, and Beverly (John) Walling, Versailles; 12 great-grandchildren, Jay Matthews, Alex Matthews, Riley Matthews, Keegan Elvidge, Mac (Carrie) Hatton, Amy Hatton, Matt Coffey, Steven McClain, Neal Fathergill, Tracie Fathergill, Nick Walling, and Kris Walling; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Carissa Hatton. A great-granddaughter, Tara Beth McClain, is deceased.
Services were conducted Saturday, June 25, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. John Brandon. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were her grandsons and her granddaughters’ husbands. Honorary bearers were her granddaughters.

Juanita Steele Parker, 86, of Versailles, widow of Maury Parker, died Friday, June 24, 2011, at the home of her son, Ed Wright.
Born Sept. 19, 1924, in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Jessie Rohrer Steele. She was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class.
In addition to her son, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, June Wright; a granddaughter, Jill Wright (Andy) Smith, Georgetown; two great-granddaughters, Maia and Ivy; a stepdaughter, Neda (Allan) Shaub, Columbus, Ohio; a stepson, Charles (Marilyn) Parker, Columbus, Ohio; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. A brother, William David Steele, is deceased.
Services were conducted Tuesday, June 28, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. John Brandon. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Casket bearers were Rick Roberts, Jim Gordon, Dick Brock, Dick Dolan, Dave Nichols, and George Owens. Honorary bearers were Monte Reinman, the members of the Joy Sunday School Class, and Vanessa Harney.
