Bannister

Louis Bannister, 85, of Versailles, husband of Minnie Bell Bannister, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at his residence.

Born Jan. 1, 1924, in Jessamine County, he was the son of the late Perry and Mary Hammonds Bannister. He had been a farmer and was retired from IBM. He was a member of the Burgin Christian Church and attended Mt. Edwin Methodist Church. He was also an avid fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepdaughters, Patty (Alvin) Duncan and Jo Ellen Wright, both of Lexington; a stepson, Lewis Ready, Versailles; four sisters, Ethel Corman, Versailles, Thelma Buffin, Lexington, Georgie Beasley, Henderson, and Ruby Redmon, Nicholasville; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Monday, March 23, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, by Mac Whitnell. Burial was in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were Ron Bannister, Ben Walling, Jimmy Downing, Alvin Duncan, Lewis Ready, and Mike Ready.

Hughes

Mary Margaret Hughes, 88, of Frankfort, widow of William Porter Hughes, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009.

Born Jan. 3, 1921, in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Callie D. Fitzgerald Cooper. She was a retired Kentucky state government employee with the finance department, attended Faith Baptist Church in Frankfort, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Hughes and Connie (Connie) Sue Bass, both of Frankfort; three sons, Morris K. Edwards, Frankfort, Bobby (Beverly) Hughes, Versailles, and Dean (Bobbi) Hughes, Frankfort; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Two sisters and two brothers are deceased.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by Bro. Everett Hawkins. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, March 26, at the funeral home.

 

Ryley

Kenneth R. Ryley, 84, a longtime local businessman, widower of Roselynne Routt Ryley and Hester Simpson Ryley, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Bluegrass Community Hospital.

Born in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Claude Reginald and Ethelwyn Landsberg Ryley. He was a businessman for over 42 years in Versailles, where he was involved in real estate, hardware, and liquor sales. He attended the Versailles Presbyterian Church and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He served in the Army Airborne Infantry, serving overseas for 30 months during World War II. He received Division Honors for the French Croix de Guerre. He was wounded at Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge, was honored with three Battle Stars and a Purple Heart.

Survivors include three daughters, Lynda L. (Ronald Smith) Ryley, Glenview, Ill., and Betty (Earl) Poynter and Norma (Nils) Kiser, both of Versailles; six grandchildren, Kenna L. (David) Burt, Charleston, S.C., Stephanie (Rich) Mahevich. Washington, D.C., Charlotte Rhorer, Tempe, Ariz., Kenneth (Bonnie) Johns, Versailles, and Shelby and Luke Williams, Versailles; and three great-grandchildren, Maddie and Quinn Burt and Lydia Johns. A sister, Joyce Ryley Wiglesworth; and two daughters, Florence Johns and Tish Williams, are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, March 23, at the Versailles Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Melissa Sevier. Interment was in the Versailles Cemetery. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
