Dotson Wallace Lee Dotson, 76, of Lawrenceburg, husband of Edna Carlton Dotson, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at his home. Born in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Eliza Bowling Dotson. He was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Lawrenceburg. He was retired from Sylvania after 38 years of service and was also a farmer. In addition to his wife of 23 years, he is survived by four sons, Donald Lee (Barbara) Dotson, Lawrenceburg, Wallace Ray Dotson, Lexington, Richard Allen (Trish) Dotson, Corbin, and Billy Joe Dotson, Georgia; a daughter, Virginia Duncan, Berea; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ora Mae Geers, Lexington; a half-brother, Stanley Richardson, Lexington; five stepchildren, Judy Kincaid, Lawrenceburg, Darlene Mangione, Versailles, J. C. (Connie) Hawkins, Lawrenceburg, Keith Allen Hawkins, Lawrenceburg, and Maurice Dwayne (Jane) Hawkins, Lawrenceburg; nine step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Four brothers, James Dotson, Dennie Dotson, John Dotson, and Raymond Dotson; two half-brothers, Buck Dotson and Bethel Dotson; and four half-sisters, Ethel Rumley, Edna Parrott, Easter Lewis, and Rosie Richardson, are deceased. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, March 5, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by Pastor Mark Studler and Bro. Kenny Robinson. Interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. Casket bearers will be R. C. Byrd, Jerry Olson, Pernell Holt, Jamie Dotson, Mark Yocum, Mark Watkins, David Black, and Carl Reynolds. Honorary bearers will be Ralph Warford and Don Votaw. Elam Charles H. Elam, 96, of Lexington, widower of Vicie Bentley Elam, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospice Care Center. Born March 5, 1912, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late William Taylor Elam and Della Nickell Elam. He was a member of First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge #1 and Oleika Shrine. He was employed at McCormick Lumber Co. and co-owner of Elam Bros. Builders. Survivors include a son, Robert (Etta) Elam, Lexington; two daughters, Annetta (Dave) Scarborough, Mobile, Ala., and Karen (Stan) Logdon, Versailles; a sister, Helen (Hubert) Barnett; two brothers, Willie Junior Elam and Roy Sterling (Katherine) Elam; seven grandchildren, Renee (Chuck) Smith, Rob Elam, Jeff (Lelia) Elam, Stuart (Serena) Logdon, Scott (Angela) Logdon, David (Christina) Scarborough, and Vicki (Jeff) Rogers; and 21 great-grandchildren, Paul, Lisa, Lee, Shelby, Kelsey, Josh, Katrina, Kyle, Austin, Emily, Christopher, Benjamin, Victoria, Andrew, Jonathan, Sophia, Rena, Adam, Ashley, Bre and Maddy Jo. A son, Lyndon Lee Elam; a granddaughter, Toika Sullivan; a sister, Flossie DeLong; and three brothers, Blaine Elam, Volney “Bob” Elam, and Bertle Elam, are deceased. Services were conducted Tuesday, March 3, at W.R. Milward Mortuary, Southland, by Bill Miller and Gene Welsh. Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were Rob Elam, Jeff Elam, Stuart Logdon, Scott Logdon, Jim Mulloy, and Tom Pennebaker. Contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Maye Ethel L. Maye, 97, widow of Taylor “Buck” Maye, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. A native of Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Margaret Lynn. She was a member of the Midway Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret M. Logan, Lexington; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Tuesday, March 3, at Clark Legacy Center by the Rev. Tom Allen. Burial was in the Midway Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to the Midway Baptist Church. McBrayer Gladys McBrayer, 92, of Big Spring, Texas, formerly of Frankfort, widow of Hart McBrayer, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009. Born July 18, 1916, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of the late Hattie and John White. She worked in defense plants in Portland, Ore., during World War II, and later in defense plants in Kentucky. She was a homemaker, but also worked in medical offices. She moved from Frankfort to Big Spring in 2000. Her hobbies were sewing and quilting, and she was a member of the Quilting Guild in Big Spring. Survivors include a son, Michael McBrayer (Joyce), Big Spring, Texas; two grandsons, Jeremy McBrayer, Big Spring, Texas, and Christopher McBrayer (Lisa), Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Bea Morris, Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Luther White; and three sisters, Bessie Smith, Edna Roberts, and Iva Faye Woods, are deceased. Services were conducted Wednesday, March 4, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by the Rev. Jay Padgett. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Miller Emma Jean Gwyn Miller, 107, of Nicholasville, widow of William Miller, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at her home. Born Sept. 29, 1901, in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Dica Caise and George Gwyn. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught school in Kentucky for over 40 years, and also served on the Jessamine County Senior Citizens board at its inception. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Bethel Methodist Church, 108 York Street, Nicholasville. Visitation will be at 11a.m. Saturday at the church. O. L. Hughes & Sons Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Smith Monica Rency Johnson Smith, 58, of Versailles, wife of William Douglas Smith, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009. Born May 8, 1950, in Lawrenceburg, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Evelyn Price Johnson. She held various occupations in her life, and for the last 23 years was a furniture consultant at Value City Furniture in Lexington. She graduated from Anderson County High School and attended Kentucky State University. She joined the Evergreen Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg at an early age and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Versailles. She was an avid reader and enjoyed music, golf with her son, and travel. In addition to her husband of 36 years, she is survived by two children, Nicole (Robert) Stromberg and Doug Smith II, Versailles; two grandchildren, Keagan and Alexander Stromberg, Versailles; two sisters, Jewell (Freddie) Brown, Harrodsburg, and Wanda (Gary) Brown, Versailles; five brothers Sherman (Donna) Johnson, New Jersey, Freddie (Doris) Johnson, Versailles, Rudy Johnson, Lawrenceburg, Vaughn (Vanessa) Johnson, Winchester, and Kurk (Tomi) Johnson, Marietta, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services were conducted Monday, March 2, at the First Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Greene. Interment was at Steele Cemetery. Casket bearers were Sherman Johnson, Freddie Johnson, Rudy Johnson, Vaughn Johnson, Kurk Johnson, and Gary Brown. Honorary bearers were Freddie Brown, Ryan Johnson, Chris Washington, Todd Baldwin, Billy Burrows, and Dave Heffner. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. VanHoose Nora Jane Wilhoite VanHoose, 60, of Frankfort, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009. Born Jan. 1, 1949, in Frankfort, she was the daughter of Ernest and Emma Wilhoite. She was a registered nurse at James B. Haggin Hospital in Harrodsburg. Survivors include a daughter, Malia Ott, Okinawa, Japan; a son, Jason Jelinek, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two grandchildren, Tristan and Liberty Ott; a sister, Terri Thomas, Frankfort; and a brother, Ernest Gene Wilhoite, Taylor, Mich. A sister, Sandy Wilhoite, is deceased. A memorial service was conducted Friday, Feb. 27, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by Brad Stone.
