Botts

Nelson Fant Botts, of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., formerly a longtime resident of Lexington and Versailles, died Aug. 2, 2009.

A short military ceremony will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville. A reception for friends and family will follow at Ludwig House, adjacent to Camp Nelson at 2820 Sugar Creek Pike (Ky. 1268), south of Nicholasville on U.S. 27, east on Ky. 1268 (three miles to entrance on right).

 

Burton

Gladys M. "Granny" Burton, 87, of Lawrenceburg, formerly of Versailles, widow of Doug Burton, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at the Central Baptist Hospital.

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Boone and Laura Gay Lear. She was a member of the Pinckard Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Allen) Sutt; and a son, Roy Burton, both of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren, including two whom she raised, Tara (Jay Simpson) Burton, Millville, and Laura (Jesse) Lacy, Lawrenceburg; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Three sons, Marion Burton, Billy Burton, and Jerry Burton; and a grandson, Denny Burton, are deceased.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Doug Simpson. Burial was in the Versailles Cemetery. Casket bearers were Allen Sutt, Jesse Lacy, Jay Simpson, Paul Maak Jr., James Maak, and Stevie Kincaid. Honorary bearers were Stewart Gash and Cody Simpson.

Crutcher

Dr. Richard Redd Crutcher, 97, of Lexington, widower of Dorothy Hillenmeyer Crutcher, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at his home.

Born July 4, 1912, in Frankfort, he was the son of the late Richard Redd Crutcher Sr. and Emma Logan Cotton Crutcher. He was a renowned thoracic and general surgeon, he performed the first heart catheterization in Central Kentucky in 1954 and the first open heart operation in Lexington in 1959. Both procedures were performed at St. Joseph Hospital, where Dr. Crutcher served in a variety of capacities during his career, including several years as the hospital’s chief of surgery. He was a graduate of Kentucky Military Institute and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army during World War II, mostly in Italy, attaining the rank of major. He was a supporter and benefactor of the Lexington Philharmonic Society and served on the Philharmonic’s board of directors. He purchased and donated to The Nature Conservancy a parcel of land in the Kentucky River Palisades area that is now known as the Crutcher Preserve in honor of his wife. He was a member of Idle Hour Country Club, Linville (N.C.) Golf and Country Club, the Lexington Club and the Newman Center.

Survivors include five children, Ann Evans Greely (John "Bud"), Richard R. Crutcher III (Gair), David C. Crutcher (Amanda), Daniel L. Crutcher (Julie), and Dorothy M. Cordray; 10 grandchildren, Shannon Totty, John J. Greely IV, Beau Greely, Laura Whitworth, Nora Crutcher, Mollie Crutcher, Mimi Cordray, Morgan Cordray and Jonathan Crutcher; and eight great-grandchildren. A brother, John Starks Crutcher, is deceased.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Newman Center, Lexington. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Milward’s Funeral Home, Broadway, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lexington Philharmonic or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

 

Duncan

Catherine Eudelle Duncan, 79, of Winchester, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, after a short illness.

Born June 22, 1930, in Versailles, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy and Claude Fields. She was a member of the First Church of God in Lexington and was an avid animal lover.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Fraley (William Fraley), Clay City, Wendy Sons, Lexington, and Sharon Soard, Winchester; three sons, Alan Soard, David Soard, (Darlene Soard), and Eddie Duncan, all of Winchester; a brother, Billie Helmburg, Somerset; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Three children, Roger Soard, Kevin Soard ,and Dottie Sons; two brothers, Jack Fields and twin brother Odelle Fields, are deceased.

Services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Grace Baptist Church, Winchester, by the Rev. Ken Menifee.

Hayes

Shirley Bryant Hayes, 79, of Shelbyville, wife of Dr. Edward B. Hayes, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.

The daughter of the late Julian Rutledge and LaMoille Wright Bryant, she had been a merchandise buyer for Wakefield-Scearce Gallery for 33 years and was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Bagdad High School and the University of Kentucky, where she had been in the Kappa Delta sorority.

In addition to her husband of 54 years, she is survived by three daughters, Ann Hayes Ronald (Peter), Louisville, Sarah "Bookie" Hayes Wilson (Judge), Versailles, and Katherine "Nene" Hayes Trentham (Matt), Anchorage; six grandchildren, Mary Rutledge "Mollie" Ronald and Sarah Boyd Ronald, both of Louisville, Elizabeth M.H. "Betsy" Wilson and Margaret B.H. "Maggie" Wilson, both of Versailles, and Ann Walston Trentham and Edward Boswell Trentham, both of Anchorage.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Centenary United Methodist Church, Shelbyville. Burial was in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Shannon Funeral Home, Shelbyville, was in charge of arrangements.

Hendricks

Mary Ruth Sabel Hendricks, 78, of Cynthiana, widow of John C. Hendricks, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Cedar Ridge Health Campus.

Born July 5, 1930, in Scott County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Edward and Ruby Stigers Sabel. She graduated in 1947 from Versailles High School as salutatorian, graduated in 1951 from Transylvania University, and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Phi Beta Professional Fraternity and A-Capella Choir and the student council. She began teaching at Thornhill Elementary School in Franklin County, taught in the Harrison County School System as choral director and co-drama director until she retired. She was a awarded Teacher of the Year by the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce in 1983. She was a member of the Cynthiana Christian Church, where she served as diaconate, president of the C.W.F., leader of the Margaret Howk Circle, director of the Cynthiana Christian Church youth choir and co-director of the Cynthiana Christian Church adult choir.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura E. Hendricks, Louisville; a son, Joe D. Hendricks, Cynthiana; a sister, Joan Carr, Lexington; and two grandchildren, Lincoln Hunter Hendricks and Chelsea Giles Hendricks. A brother, Ron Sabel, is deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Nov. 16, at the Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana, by Dr. Larry W. Bishop. Burial was in Battle Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mark and Lee Sabel, Neil and Reed Mahoney, Lucas Tarter, and Bruce Hampton. Honorary bearers were Melvin Hampton, Bill Ham, Mark Stubbs and William Caywood.

Memorials may be made to the C.W.F. of Cynthiana Christian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association .

 

Horwitz

Ina Dailey Horwitz, 98, of Frankfort, widow of Louis V. Horwitz, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009.

Born July 3, 1911, in Wewoka, Okla., she was the daughter of the late George Thomas and Lelia Harrod Dailey.

Shortly after her birth, her family returned to Kentucky to their farm in Swallowfield. She enjoyed farming and assisting in managing the farm all of her life. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Frankfort, the Frankfort Country Club, the Homemakers Garden Club and the American Rose Society. She had many hobbies, including photography, quilting, dressmaking, needlepoint and embroidery. In her younger days she enjoyed boating and surf boarding with her husband.

Survivors include a daughter, Melodye H. Kinkead (Shelby), Versailles and her son by marriage, Arthur J. Horwitz (Joan), New York, N.Y.; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Kinkead Descarpentries (Christophe), Albuquerque, N.M., Alex Kinkead Mason, Albuquerque, N.M., Jan Horwitz Abraham (David), Merion Station, Pa., and Lisa Horwitz Booth (Henry), Coatsville, Pa.; a grandson, R. J. Horwitz, Grafton, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren, Ina Elizabeth Mason, Lola McCall Mason, Louis Carneal Descarpentries, Jordana Abraham, Juliet Abraham, Rose Abraham, Laura Booth, and Nicholas Booth; two nieces, Brenda Hawkins Tipton (Bill) and Anne Hawkins Morgan (Rudy); a nephew, John Dailey Hawkins, and other nephews. Three brothers, Aubrey Dailey, Harry Dailey and Howard Dailey, and a sister, Helen Dailey Hawkins, are deceased.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the First United Methodist Church, Frankfort, by Dr. Jackson Brewer. Burial was in the Frankfort Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jimmy Dailey, Richard Dailey, Gayle Dailey, Mike Dailey, Keith Tipton, and Will Graham. Harrod Brothers Funeral Home, Frankfort, was in charge of arrangements.

Perkins

Lewis E. "Perk" Perkins, 74, of Versailles, widower of Dorothy Williams Perkins, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.

Born April 23, 1935, in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Madison Allen and Maggie Sturgeon Perkins. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War and was a bus driver for the Woodford County School System.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle (Gary) Noble, Frankfort; two sons, Perry Wayne (Diane) Hibbard, Lexington, and Barry Lynn Hibbard, Danville; three grandchildren, Josh Gipson, Barry Lynn Hibbard, Jr., and Jennifer Hibbard; and a sister, Barbara Sharp, Versailles. Four brothers and a sister are deceased.

Services were conducted Monday, Nov. 16, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by the Rev. Gilbert Sargent. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were Mark Lancaster, Bobby Gaffney, Rocky Finley, Henry Boone, Allen Perkins, Jason Noble.

Rhorer

Joyce M. Rhorer, 74, of Nicholasville, widow of Hugh F. Rhorer, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

Born Jan. 17, 1935, in Jessamine County, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle Teater Megee and John Clay Megee. She was a member of Brookside Baptist Church in Nicholasville and a retired executive secretary for American States Insurance.

Survivors include two sons, Alvin (Jeanette) Rhorer, Bonnots Mill, Mo., and John (Dana) Shull, Chattanooga, Tenn.; a daughter, Sherry (Norman) Prickett, Alamo, Calif.; two sisters, Lila Edgington, Bryantsville, and Eloyce Tracy, Versailles; a brother, Thomas Allen Megee, Portage, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Will Rhorer, Robert Rhorer, Jason Shull, Taylor Shull, Morgan Shull, Joe Stroupe, and Josh Stroupe; a nephew, Marty (Amy) Megee, Nicholasville; and many other nieces and nephews. A sister, Ann Clay Jason, is deceased.

Services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 14, at Clark Legacy Center, Nicholasville, by the Rev. DeWayne Brewer. Burial was in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.

Riley

Anna Mae Riley, 90, of Versailles, widow of Hillary G. Riley, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at her residence.

Born Aug. 23, 1919, in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late George and Rachel Cooper . She was a former employee of Central Baptist Hospital and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Clarence (Kathy) Riley, Owenton, Jerry (Sandy) Riley, Lexington, and Leslie Riley, Versailles; a sister, Dorothy Williams, Lexington; and a grandson, Gary Wayne Riley, Lexington.

Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, was in charge of arrangements.

Scott

James Edwin Scott Jr., 55, of Lawrenceburg, husband of Pam C. Scott, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his residence.

Born July 26, 1954, in Elizabethtown, he was the son of Mina Burress Scott of Larue County and the late James Edwin Scott Sr. He was a 30-year employee of Kentucky state government, most recently working with the Department of Local Government, was a member of Anderson County Sportsman’s Club, a member of Lawrenceburg First Christian Church and Rolling Fork Baptist Church in Larue County.

In addition to his wife of 29 years and his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Amy and Angela Scott, Bowling Green, and Erin Scott, Lawrenceburg; a grandson, Brayden Scott; a sister, Marsha Scott Webster, Zionsville, Ind.; and a brother, George E. (Ruth) Scott, Marion County.

Services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Lawrenceburg First Christian Church by the Rev. Jim Wheeler. A committal service was conducted at the Highview United Methodist Church Cemetery in Marion County by the Rev. Duane Howell. Casket bearers were Brandon and Patrick Scott, Rob Gresham, Robert Owens, Steve Brown, and Gabe Nickel. Honorary bearers were Hillery Helton, Bobby Sutherland, William Scott, Mike Smith, Jeff Hana, Tim Frederick, Gene Kiser, and Earl Gresham. Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Sharp

Raymond Wade Sharp, 74, of Versailles, husband of Barbara Perkins Sharp, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital.

The son of the late Wade and Margaret Groves Sharp, he was a retired employee at Dixie Cup.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by two daughters, Gayla (Henry) Boone, Springfield, and Janice (Rocky) Finley, Versailles; three grandchildren, Kristen and Jordan Finley, Versailles, and Jason Sanders, Frankfort; four brothers, Bill Taylor, Ronald Sharp, and Donald Sharp, all of Versailles, and Otis Sharp, Lexington.

Services were conducted Monday, Nov. 9, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, by the Rev. Gilbert Sargent. Burial was in Rose Crest Cemetery. Casket bearers were Barry Hibbard, Perry Hibbard, Ervin Manley, Bruce Manley, Allen Perkins, and Ronald C. Sharp.
