Allison Alfred "Al" B. Allison Jr., 78, of North Charleston, S.C., died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at his residence. Born March 26, 1931, in Georgetown, he was the son of the late Alfred B. and Mattie L. Cummins Allison. He was a graduate of Midway High School, an Air Force veteran, and was retired from the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, S.C. He was an avid golfer and a ranger at Eagle Landing Golf Club. Survivors include a son, A. Glenn Allison (Brooke), Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two daughters, Laura A. Allison (Bill), James Island, S.C., and Amy A. Allen (Frank), Hanahan, S.C.; a brother, Robert G. Allison (Betty), Midway; a sister, Betsy A. Lusby (George), Georgetown; an aunt, Geneva Carr (Vick), Lexington; five grandchildren, Ashleigh, Megan and Tyler Allen, and Rand and Ann Frances Allison; a great-grandchild, Gunnar Haulbrooks; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family received visitors on Thursday Nov. 19, at Carolina Memorial, Charleston, S.C. Mathews IV, 75, of Nicholasville, husband of Lorna Mathews, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, after an illness. Born Jan. 7, 1934, in Jessamine County, he was the son of the late William H. and Opal Cotton Mathews Stivers. He was self-employed in sales, a U.S. Army veteran, a longtime Nicholasville businessman, a former employee of IBM, and a graduate of Transylvania University, being a member of Phi Kappa Alpha. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Anne Mathews (Alec) Kempe, Virginia, Susan Mathews, Nicholasville, and William H (Dorothy), Versailles; a stepdaughter, Melanie Fransen, Lexington; four grandchildren, Charles and Frasher Kempe and Allen and Hannah Williams. Services were conducted Monday, Nov. 23, at Betts & West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, by Chaplain Jim Harrison. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ted Moss, Bobby Kanatzar, George Overstreet, Dr. J.B. Hunter, Sid East, Bobby and Tommy Dean, and William Q. Muir. Shipp Lois A. Shipp, 72, of Lexington, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009. Born Dec. 8, 1936, in White Oak, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Janice Wardlow Schatzman. She had been a secretary for the State of Kentucky. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Wilhoit, Versailles; two sons, Tom Shipp and Troye Shipp, both of Lexington; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A brother, Wendell Schatzman, is deceased. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing, Nicholasville. Graveside services will take place at 3 p.m. at the Sardinia Village Cemetery in Sardinia, Ohio, by the Rev. Kevin Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass. Condolences may be made at www.clarklegacycenter.com. Whitaker Harlin Whitaker, 82, of Millville, husband of Clovis Fields Whitaker, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009. Born Feb, 21, 1927, in Letcher County, he was the son of the late William B. and Maudie Isom Whitaker. He was an educator at Millville Elementary and was the transportation director for the Woodford County Bus Garage, and a Boy Scout and 4-H Leader. He enjoyed fishing, raising fruit trees, and farming. He also served with the U.S. Army. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Anita (Gary) Whitaker Jones, Troy, and Jana Lee Whitaker, Millville; a son, Keith (Tammy) Whitaker, Millville; three grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Taylor Whitaker, and Matthew Whitaker; a great-grandson, Donovan Jones; two sisters, Roxie Fields, North Carolina, and Frances Whitaker, Blackey; and a brother, Ivan Whitaker, Winchester. Three brothers, Charlie, Hiram, and Jerry Whitaker, are deceased. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Clark Funeral Home, Versailles Road, Frankfort, by Greg Whitaker. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers will be Keith Whitaker, Christopher Jones, Matthew Whitaker, Taylor Whitaker, Greg Whitaker, and Buddy Wingate. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and last until the time of service today. Donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or Monica Combs Scholarship Fund.
