Blankenship Mayme Lee Adams Blankenship, 83, of Versailles, wife of Harrison Blankenship, died Monday, Sept. 14, at the Hospice Care Center, Lexington. Born at Jeffersontown in Jefferson County, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Lora Shelton Adams. She was a retired Woodford County school bus driver and former employee of Vic Tone Cleaners. She had also worked at Gordon Cleaners in Frankfort. She was a member of the Clear Creek Baptist Church and attended the Versailles Church of God. In addition to her husband of 44 years, she is survived by a nephew, Scott Adams, Shelby County; and eleven stepchildren. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Frankie Layne. Interment will follow in Rose Crest Cemetery. Bond, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital South, Indianapolis, Ind. Born Oct. 20, 1981, in Lexington, she was the daughter of Alan Slugantz, Salvisa, and Julie Riddell (Gary) LaPorta, Martinsville, Ind. She was a 2000 graduate of Brown County High School and attended Ivy Tech in Columbus for Phlebotomy. She was a member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church and a volunteer for Big Brothers-Big Sisters in Brown County. She enjoyed shopping, scrap booking, reading biographies and listening to gospel music. In addition to her parents and stepfather, she is survived by a brother, Eric W. (Rose) Slugantz, Cincinnati, Ohio; her maternal grandfather, Eddie Arnold, Madisonville; her grandmothers, Martha Rund, Morgantown, Ind., and Jean Bond, Brown County, Ind.; an aunt, Billie Lacefield, Versailles; and an uncle, Tony Riddle, Versailles. Her grandmother, Libby Arnold; and her grandfather, Joe O. Riddle, are deceased. Services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Morgantown United Methodist Church, Morgantown, Ind., by the Rev. Crow Cassidy Lucinda Crow, 2-1/2 months, daughter of Michael Alan Crow and Melanie Elizabeth Sharp of Lexington, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009. She was born July 2, 2009. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Barbara Sharp, Lexington; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Katherine Crow, Lexington; paternal great-grandparents, Ted and Bonnie Sharp, Versailles; two aunts, Angie Abnie and Christal Bailey, both of Lexington; an uncle, Rob Crow, Versailles; a great-aunt, Diana Aubrey, Lexington; a great-uncle, David Aubrey, Lexington; all from Lexington; and several cousins. Services were conducted Friday, Sept. 11, at Clark Legacy Center, Nicholasville, by the Rev. Allen Conner. Dearing Paul Wayne Dearing, 75, of Versailles, husband of Dorothy H. Dearing, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital after a short illness. Born May 8, 1934, in Lexington, he was the son of the late William H. and Ada E. Dearing. He attended Georgetown College and received a Naval postgraduate degree in Monterey, Calif. He retired after 26 years of active naval service at the rank of captain. He served two tours in Vietnam as flight deck officer on the USS Kitty Hawk and flew numerous air missions as a fighter pilot. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Reserve Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His final six years were served at the Pentagon as Chief Naval Operations Officer. He was a Baptist but attended St. Leo Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Lucy (Rick) Carver, Calais, Maine, Melissa Nickerson Gallagher, Versailles, Timothy J. (Nancy) Dearing, Lexington, Jill (Doug) Logan, Prescott, Ariz., Vicky (Seth) Jones, Coronado, Calif., and Denice (Joe) Harris, Monroe, N.C.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jim (Kaye) Dearing, Versailles. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 17, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. E. B. Smith. Interment with military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. today at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Derringer Paul "Tony" Derringer, 53, of Versailles, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the Bluegrass Community Hospital. Born Feb. 28, 1956, in Versailles, he was the son of Ruby Edmondson Derringer, Versailles, and the late John McDaniel Derringer. He was a retired employee of the Department of Transportation. Hurt Atwood "Buddy" Vanarsdell Hurt Jr., 65, of Versailles, husband of Patricia Ann Kerns Hurt, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at his home. Born July 1, 1944, in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Atwood Vanarsdell Hurt Sr. and Velma Louise Halfhill Hurt. He was a farmer, member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church and the Nonesuch Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Buddy Lee (Margaret) Hurt, West Virginia, and Douglas Atwood (Kristie) Hurt, Lexington; a stepdaughter, Susie McClure, Crab Orchard; a stepson, Bobby McClure, Wilmore; six grandchildren, Caleb and Laykin Hurt, West Virginia, Kaitlin and Lauren Hurt, Lexington, and Cheyenne McClure and Faith Brock, Crab Orchard; a sister, Norma (Sheridan) Flora, Versailles; and other family members. The daughter of Elsie Lyons Froman, Versailles, and the late George Williams, she was a 1959 Lafayette High School graduate, a member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church since 1982, and was retired from Eastern State Hospital with 27 years of service. In addition to her husband of 48 years and her mother, she is survived by a son, Kenney Krom Jr.; two daughters, Teresa (Mike) Manley and Brenda (Dan) Campbell, both of Lexington; two brothers, Danny Williams, Versailles, and Larry Williams, Lexington; six grandchildren, Alex, Jordan, Cameron and Addison Manley, and Meagan and Caleb Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. Born June 14, 1952, in Versailles, he was the son of Ruth Lathery Rhineheimer, Wilmore, and the late Scott Wesley McKinney Sr. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by five children, Amy (Pete) Feeback, Harrodsburg, Keith (Lisa) McKinney, Nicholasville, Jason (Lori) McKinney, Russell Springs, Jesse McKinney, Lexington, and Daniel McKinney, Nicholasville; two stepchildren, Carey (Michelle) and Jeremy Montgomery, both of Nicholasville; three sisters, Jody (Darryl) Warren, Nicholasville, Becky Rhine, Oregon, and Susan (Jeff) Rice, Nicholasville; 18 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Rhodes Laurel Marie Gabbard Rhodes, 52, of Versailles, wife of Steve Rhodes, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at her home. Born Nov. 11, 1956, in Jessamine County, she was the daughter of Virginia Cole Gabbard and the late Robert M. Gabbard. In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Jamie and Morgan Rhodes, Versailles; two brothers, James Gabbard (Valerie), and Don Gabbard (Ruth); two sisters, Sue Smith (Van) and Carol McWilliams (Chuck); and several nieces and nephews. Guest book at www.hagerandcundifffunerals.com. Sholar Raymond F. Sholar, 75, of Versailles, husband of Lois Sholar, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the University of Kentucky A.B. Chandler Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident which occurred on Friday, Sept. 11. Born in Hopkinsville, he was the son of the late Joe Henry and Elsie Mae McGee Sholar. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was retired from Trackside Farm, where he had been a maintenance foreman. A longtime member of the Glen’s Creek Baptist Church, he was a member of the Knights of Phythias, Gray Lodge # 27, in Versailles, was the Deputy Supreme Chancellor of Kentucky at the time of his death, and was the past Grand Chancellor in 1992 and 1993. He was instrumental in efforts to support the Special Olympics of Kentucky through the efforts of the K. P. Lodges in Kentucky. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Amanda (Clay) Philpot, Lexington; three sons, Ricky (Mary Ann ) Sholar, Alan (Bobbie) Sholar, and Jerry (Ruby) Sholar, all of Versailles; a sister, Betty Jo Mitchell, Hopkinsville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two nephews. Services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home. Interment was held Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Sunset Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Ken Underwood. Tackett, 80, of Lexington, husband of Harriet L. Allen, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009. Born in Prestonsburg, he was the son of the late Joseph Patterson and Hazel Minerva Wallen Tackett. He was the 1947 valedictorian of Prestonsburg High School and a 1952 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law. He served in the U.S. Army JAG Corps from 1952 to 1955 and the Army Reserve from 1955 to 1972, retiring as a major. He was a partner in Turley, Tackett, Savage and Moore law firm and later Tackett and Allen. He served as assistant commonwealth attorney from 1969 to 1972 before being appointed as Fayette Circuit Court judge by then-Gov. Wendell Ford, presiding from 1972 to 1991. He received the Henry T. Duncan Award in 1976 and was a Fayette County Bar Association member since 1955. He was a Mine Safety Review Commissioner from 2002 to 2003, appointed by then-Gov. Paul Patton. Upon his retirement, he and his wife opened Talon Winery in Fayette County. He was a deacon and elder of Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Dana (John Lynch) Tackett, Lexington, Joni (Tom) Campbell, Versailles, and Gena Tackett, Lexington; two stepdaughters, Lori Baumgardner and Audrey (Jon Manuel) Baumgardner, both of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Matt (Ashley Watson) Page, Jack Lynch, Lauren, Sarah, and Olivia Manuel, Ryan Baumgardner, and Robby Bissell; and a brother, Ed (Beulah) Tackett, Lexington. Three brothers, Herschel, Bernard, and Joseph; and a sister, Mildred Ryan, are deceased. Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, by the Rev. Steve Drury. Burial will follow in the Lexington Cemetery. USAF (Ret.), died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, N.M., of lung cancer. Born Nov. 23, 1933, in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Dr. H. Halbert Leet and Dorothy Day Leet. After graduating from Henry Clay High School, she attended the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She later graduated from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. For many years she taught school and was an avid reader, gardener and accomplished painter. She was active in Republican organizations for many years until her health required that she take a more inactive role. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, William Hunt Hodge (Georgia), Houston, Texas, Warren Matthew Hodge (Carolyn), Boerne, Texas, and Robert Edward Hodge III, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Christopher Colin Hodge, Jeffery Allen Hodge, and Alexandra Ann Hodge; a brother, Halbert Leet (Karen); six sisters, Carol Leet, Lynda Lail (Robert), Joy Leet-Mullins (Brad) and Mimi Leet, all of Lexington, Dorothy Boone (George), Eddyville, and Gay Cecil (Rex), Versailles; and a special cousin, Vicki Leet Vance (P.T.), Lexington; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Van Hook Alice Evelyn Rogers Van Hook, 76, of Lexington, wife of Edward D. Van Hook, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Mayfair Manor Nursing Home, of Parkinson’s Disease. Born Nov. 23, 1932, in Barrier in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Othal D. and Dova Barrier Rogers. She graduated from Nashville Business College in the early 1950s, worked in Tennessee’s social services department, then moved to Somerset, Ky., where she was employed by Jellico Grocery Co. She was a retired employee of the Fayette County Board of Elections and a former employee of G.F. Vaughan Tobacco Co. and Young Industries in Lexington. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching children’s Bible classes for many years. In addition to her husband of nearly 53 years, she is survived by three daughters, Melanie (Bill) White, Lawrenceburg, Katherine (David) Ritter, Lexington, and Julie Van Hook, Lexington; eight grandchildren, Tim, Sam, and Hannah White, Perry, Dane, and Sarah Ritter, and Amanda and Max Wilburn; a sister and three brothers, Lucille Eads, Monticello, O.D. (Doris) Rogers, Versailles, U.S. Congressman Harold (Cynthia) Rogers, Somerset, and Wayland Rogers, Chicago, Ill.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A sister, Inodene (Lloyd) Tatum, is deceased. Services were conducted Monday, Sept. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, Lexington, by Dr. Robert G. Baker and the Rev. William K. Simmons.
