Midway City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance maintaining the .055percent tax rate on real and personal property for 2024-2025 at its August 19, 2024, meeting.

Mayor Grayson Vandegrift informed the council that according to Woodford County Property Valuation Administrator John Paul Coyle, real property in Midway is up next for re-assessment next year.

“This means we can expect property taxes will rise since we know they have risen since the last assessment,” said Vandegrift. “So we will need to reduce the rate next year to make (up) for the increased revenue the new assessments will trigger.”

Consulting agreement

The council approved an agreement with MWM Consulting, which also includes the City of Versailles and Woodford County Fiscal Court, for a menu of services related to the marketing of existing and new industrial properties and prospects. Midway’s share of the $138,000 contract will be 10 percent, or $13,800.

Water grant

The council approved a resolution to authorize applying for a grant from Kentucky Water and Wastewater Assistance for the construction of a line between the Coach Station Road and the Midway Water Plant. This line will be needed as the infrastructure is being constructed to implement the new agreement with the Frankfort Plant Board for the provision of Midway’s drinking water.

Vandegrift said this will be important to maintain sufficient water pressure. Describing the Frankfort Plant Board agreement as one of Midway’s “greatest long-term initiatives,” Vandegrift said once the project is completed “the cost for water will be lower than Kentucky-American (Water) even during the period the infrastructure costs are being repaid.”

Fall festival volunteers

Vandegrift reported a request from Zach Rankin, head of volunteers for the Midway fall festival. The festival still needs volunteers for set-up, cart drivers and various other jobs. People can sign up by contacting Rankin at his business, Midway Makers Market on Main Street.

Walter Bryant Park volunteer potluck

Councilmember Patrick Hall reported the board of Walter Bradley Park is hosting a potluck on August 24 from 4-7 p.m. at the park pavilion to honor park volunteers. People planning to attend should bring a dish to add to the potluck.

Chase Thurman

The council congratulated Midway resident and Woodford County High School senior Chase Thurman on graduating from Army basic training last week. Thurman is now a private in the United States Army. He graduated with honors and was in the top 10 percent of his battery.
