Sovereignty wins Breeder Cup Classic

SOVEREIGNTY, a Woodford County native who was born and weaned at Godolphin’s Gainsborough Farm on Steele Road, guaranteed his listing on the roll of all-time champions with a win in last Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic held at Keeneland Race Course, besting an incredibly strong field that included a fellow Kentucky Derby Champion and last year’s Classic winner. Sovereignty, following wins in last year’s Derby and Belmont Stakes, returned under the tutelage of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and the skills of jockey Junior Alvarado, for a 4-year-old campaign with the sole goal of winning the Classic. A true keepsake for any owner is the winner’s floral blanket created since 1988 by Kroger, and this year by the Versailles Kroger. According to a press release from Kroger, each blanket consists of a special mix of 108 custard-yellow cremones and 265 rich purple asters, with the crown accented with six Cattleya orchids along with solidago, Italian ruscus, oregonia and leather leaf. The flowers are carefully glued into satin-backed panels designed not only to look beautiful but to safely drape across a Thoroughbred’s body, a safety concern always at the forefront. SOVEREIGNTY thunders home to a career-topping victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last Saturday at Keeneland. Godolphin, LLC, the stallion’s owner founded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will retire him to the breeding shed to stand at its breeding and stud farm, Jonabell, in Fayette County.
