WCMS wrestling takes second at Region 4 tourney


The Woodford County Middle School wrestling team travelled to Johnson County on Sunday, Jan. 30, for the Region 4 wrestling tournament and came home with a second-place finish out of the 22 teams in the event. Individually, Woodford had seven top four placers, which included one region title winner in Triston Brooks. The top four placers will now go to the state tournament, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Louisville Convention Center. In the team competition, Johnson County won with 207 points, Woodford was second with 140 points and Carr Wrestling Academy was third with 113 points. Rounding out the top 10 were Wayne County, fourth with 112 points, followed by Anderson County with 102 points, Madison County with 96.5 points, Elkhorn with 90 points, Martin County with 68 points, Bourbon County with 48 points and Scot County with 37 points. Individually, here are the wrestlers who placed in the top four and will be going to state. Champion Tristan Brooks wrestled in the 121-pound weight class and defeated Elkhorn’s Jalin Montgomery to win the title in his division. 2nd Place Connor Dutton wrestled in the 75-pound weight class and lost in the final to Madison’s Chris Begely to finish second in his division. Reece Goss wrestled in the 92-pound weight class and lost to Johnson County’s Blue Fletcher in the championship match to finish second in his division. Jonathan Pittman finished second in the 113-pound weight class, losing to McNabb’s Morgan Martin in the final. 4th Place Ashley Courtney wrestled in the 86-pound weight class and lost in third-/fourth-place match to Johnson County’s Jacob Salyers to finish fourth in her division. Jackson Geilear finished fourth in the 98-pound weight class, losing to Anderson County’s Ethan Fowler in the third-/fourth-place match. Dylan Bourne wrestled in the 105-pound weight class and finished fourth. He lost in the third-/fourth-place match to Johnson County’s Dalton Lawson. 5th Place Gavin Andreoni took home fifth-place in the 80-pound weight class after defeating Wayne County’s Trenton Lange in the fifth-/sixth-place match. 7th Place Connor Walsh wrestled in the 130-pound weight class and defeated Ashland’s Jack Latherow in the seventh-/eighth-place match to take home seventh place in his division. Other wrestlers who competed in the tournament, but did not place, were Richie Cunningham (140 pounds), Grant Garrison (168 pounds), Maquoia Bernabe (190 pounds) and Cameron Owen (240 pounds).
