Adry T. Nelson, 90, of Versailles, died Friday, March 25, 2016, at Daisy Hill Senior Living. Born Sept. 5, 1925, in Dooley, Mont., he was the son of the late Adry and Violet Cadieux Nelson. At age 18, he joined the United States Army, where he served in World War II. He landed on Normandy Beach and was later captured and held as a prisoner of war in Germany. For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Following the war, he married Nora Nelson while he was serving in the Army Signal Corps in Berlin, Germany. He continued to serve his country for more than 30 years, including during the Korean War, before retiring with the rank of command sergeant major. Later, through active duty reserve, he advanced to the rank of colonel. Survivors include three daughters, Kristin A. (Leon) Tedford, Abilene, Texas, Kathleen N. (John) Young, Versailles, and Karin Stokley, South Hadley, Mass.; two sisters, Elita Hagen and Evelyn Nelson, both of Missoula, Mont.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 1, at Memorial Gardens in Fort Myers, Fla. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held in Versailles at a later date.
