Lady Jackets 5th at Lady Jacket Summer Classic

The Woodford County High School girls’ varsity basketball hosted eight teams in the annual Lady Jacket Summer Classic basketball tournament, which was heldMonday to Wednesday, June 20 to 22, at The Hive. After losing their first four games against some very tough Kentucky teams, Woodford finished the week with two wins on Wednesday – a 40-33 win over Madison Central and a 24-23 win over Bourbon County, to finish in fifth place. “Our team finished 2-4 in our classic with two nice wins over Madison Central and Bourbon County on the last day of the summer (season),” said Woodford head coach Jay Lucas. “Always good to finish with wins. Overall, we were 6-8 this summer, including Transy team camp, and made some good progress together as a team. I really like how everyone plays for each other on our team this year. It’s a fun group to coach.” Woodford opened the camp on Monday, with a 42-28 loss to Collins and a 48-29 loss to Mercer County. On Tuesday, Woodford lost 38-29 to Dunbar and 52-37 to Boyle County. The Lady Jackets then rebounded with their two wins on Wednesday to close out their summer season. Overall, Mercer County finished the week 6-0 and defeated Dunbar 59-43 for the championship in the classic, while Collins defeated Boyle County 60-33 to finish in third place. The summer dead period is now in effect for all high school sports. It runs between June 25 and July 9. With that in mind, The Woodford Sun will begin a review of the WCHS 2015-2016 athletic seasons starting in next week’s paper with a look at the 2015 fall sports; football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball and cross country.
