Mildred Ida Kirtley, 78, of Versailles, wife of Richard Kirtley Jr., died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at Baptist Healthcare, Lexington. Born Aug. 5, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Lottie Belle Carter Lilly and Logan Lilly. She was raised by her aunt Anna Perry following the death of her mother when she was two years old. She was a longtime active member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, was a retired employee of Rand McNally & Co., and had served as a nurse's aide at Woodford Memorial Hospital. She was best known to many as Mama Kirtley or Granny. In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by two daughters, Darlene Jackson, Versailles, and Danita Kirtley, Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Richard (Rita) Kirtley III, Versailles; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Marlene Wilson, Versailles; two sisters-in-law, Mary Alice Trent, Versailles and Minnie Lilly, Lexington; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Two children, Diane Marie Harris and Darrell Gene Kirtley; and three brothers, James, Arthur, and Allen Lilly, are deceased. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 15, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Strode officiating. Burial will be in Steele Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Randy Harris, Dereke Kirtley, Rico Kirtley, Domonique Kirtley, Michael Kirtley and Elijah Jones. Honorary bearers will be her nephews. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
