WCMS wrestling team takes 3rd place at WCI

The Woodford County Middle School wrestling team hosted the Woodford County Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 19, in the WCMS gym and took third place out of 17 teams in the event. Winning the tournament was Johnson Central with 167 points, while the Carr Wrestling Academy finished second with 126 points and Woodford finished third with 124.5 points. Rounding out the top six was McNabb in fourth with 106 points, Scott County in fifth with 102 points and, tied for sixth, was Anderson County and Shamrock with 94 points each. Individually for Woodford, two wrestlers, Reece Goss and Jonathan Pittman, won first place in their weight classes. The team also had one second-place finisher in Courtney, one third-place finisher in Tony Ornelas, and three fourth-place finishers in Gavin Andreoni, Jackson Geilear, and Will Smithers. Here are the results of each weight class. At 92 pounds, Gavin Andreoni went 2-2 on the day and finished fourth after losing to Johnson Central’s Jacob Cain in the third/fourth place final. At 98 pounds, Goss went undefeated on the day, 3-0, and defeated his teammate Ashley Courtney to win the title. Courtney finished 2-1 and scored a second-place finish in the tournament. Geilear finished in fourth place in the 113-pound weight class. He went 3-2 on the day and lost the third/fourth-place final to Shamrock’s Jonathan Phillips. At 121 pounds, Pittman went undefeated on the day, 4-0, and defeated Boudurant’s Jeffery Parker to win his weight class. Then at 152 pounds, Smithers went 4-2 on the day and lost the third/fourth place match to McNabb’s Jordan Diaz to finish in fourth place. In the 168-pound weight class, Ornelas was 3-1 on the day and defeated Tates Creek’s Isaiah Davis to win third place. According to reports, the rest of the team wrestled hard, but did not place. However, they gained good experience for their next tournament. Next up, Woodford participates in the Elkhorn Pittman Dual meet in Frankfort on Saturday, Nov. 26. Start time is approximately 10 a.m.
