Versailles School Apartments to host grand opening Dec. 8

AU Associates, a company responsible for repurposing the former Versailles Elementary School into an apartment building, will host a grand opening on Thursday morning, Dec. 8, beginning at 11:30. The grand opening program will feature speaker former Kentucky first lady Libby Jones as well as a history of the building, most recently Woodford County Public Schools' Community Education Center. The open house will give former students, teachers and other community members - as well as anyone interested in living here - an opportunity to tour Versailles School Apartments at 299 South Main Street. Because door locations have not been changed, a former Versailles Elementary School student or teacher who walks down a hallway will be able to identify where they went to class. The repurposed building will house six one-bedroom, three two-bedroom and four three-bedroom apartments. Apartments have original architectural features, including hardwood floors, large windows and built-in shelves. The varying classroom sizes meant project architects put in a lot of hard work in terms of designing and laying out each apartment. "Each of the different units has its own character," said Johan Graham. The director of development for AU Associates said current trends in architecture and design also has a role in whether an apartment has an open floor concept or segregated living and kitchen spaces. One of the more challenging spaces in Versailles School Apartments was a one-bedroom apartment with a spiral staircase, but Graham predicted that living space will draw interest because it's unique. "I really like the fact," Graham said, "that we're building spaces that are both functional and contemporary, but have that historic feel" for families with income levels of $20,000 to $25,000 annually. "If you provide a superior product," he added, "people take care of it." Anyone interested in submitting an application to lease an apartment may contact AU Associates' leasing office at (859) 268-0019. Criminal background and credit screenings will ensure applicants are income-qualified for the low-income housing tax credit program, according to Graham. "We would love to build more family units in Woodford County because I think there's a demand for it," he said. AU Associates had originally hoped to host its grand opening for Versailles School Apartments in late October, but the nature of renovation work to repurpose a school building can have unforeseen delays, Graham said.
