Letter to the editor

Proud to be a WC student Editor, The Sun: I think we sometimes forget just how truly blessed we are to be students in Woodford County. It is not just the amazing KPREP scores that label our district “distinguished.” It is the fabulous teachers and staff, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, janitors, students, and parents all the way up to the site-based decision making councils and Woodford County School Board that make our schools top notch. I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know of my recent experience presenting before the WCMS site-based decision making council, the WCHS site-based decision making council, and the Woodford County School Board, where I asked that a student representative be permitted to serve on each of these bodies in order to give a student perspective on issues related to policies and decision making in our schools. I was amazed when all three bodies agreed and were not only willing but interested in giving students a voice on Woodford County educational policy issues. It is extremely rare when adults are willing to acknowledge that we students can be valuable partners who are able to make a real contribution in Woodford County Schools. We are empowered to reach for the stars and demonstrate 21st Century skills of collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. I appreciate our school leaders teaching us to have a voice and then being willing to allow us to use that voice. For more information, read the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team’s recent publication “Students as Partners.” Matti Springate Versailles
