WCMS wrestling team takes third in District 7 tourney


The Woodford County Middle School wrestling team traveled to Anderson County Middle School on Saturday, Jan. 14, for the District 7 wrestling tournament and finished in third place. In addition, 13 of 18 wrestlers placed in the tournament, four of them winning championship titles and 12 of them advancing to the regional tournament, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, at Woodford County Middle School. The top finishes in each weight class will then advance to the state tournament. Here are the results. Team competition As mentioned, Woodford finished in third place out of 11 teams with 192 points. Winning the tournament was Carr Wrestling Academy with 205 points, with Anderson County second with 202 points. Rounding out the finishes, Scott County was fourth with 129 points, followed by Bondurant Middle School fifth with 104 points, Madison County sixth with 96 points, Elkhorn Middle School seventh with 56 points, Bourbon County with 31 points, EJ Hayes Middle School ninth with 34 points and Tates Creek Middle School with no points.

Individual competition Woodford had four wrestlers win their weight classes in the tournament. In the 94-pound weight class, Gavin Andrioni defeated Anderson County’s Joshua Strayer to win his title. At 100-pounds, Reece Goss defeated Carr Wrestling Academy’s Gus Roberts to win his title. In the 123-pound weight class, Jonathan Pittman defeated Scott County’s Caleb Wittry to win his title. In the 154-pound weight class, Tony Ornelas defeated his teammate Will Smithers to win the title. Smithers finished in second place. In addition to Smithers, the Tigers had three other wrestlers finish in second place in their weight class. At 115 pounds, Jackson Geilear lost to Carr Wrestling Academy’s Zac Cowan to finish in second place. At 170 pounds, Andrew Kartner lost to Anderson County’s Everett Marret to finish in second place. At 192 pounds, Gran Garrison lost to Anderson County’s Dyllan Davis to finish in second place. One Woodford wrestler finished in third place. At 82 pounds, Conner Dutton defeated Madison County’s Lucas Hutchison to score his third-place finish. Woodford also had three wrestlers finish in fourth place and one finished in fifth. In the 100-pound weight class, Ashley Courtney lost to Bourbon County’s Josh French and finished in fourth place. At 132 pounds, Camden Bohanan lost to Madison County’s Marcus Hutchison to finish in fourth place. At 170 pounds, Israel Ortiz lost to Bondurant Middle School’s Britton Franklin to finish in fourth place. At 142 pounds, Joseph Rivera defeated Elkhorn Middle School’s Kenneth Aitken to finish in fifth place. Woodford also had five other wrestlers compete in the competition, but they did not place. They were William Embry (107 lbs.), Noah Floyd (123 lbs), Jose Trejo (132 lbs.), Jonathan Sturgeon (142 lbs.) and Deneise Ortiz (170 lbs.). Next up, the regional tournament will be held in the WCMS gym on Saturday, Jan. 21.
