Midway News - Personals and Comments
The cold weather has finally found us. Things were moving a bit slowly downtown this week and those who were downtown were wrapped up pretty tight. Of course, there is always that one exception. There was that one visitor (the airline must have lost his luggage) who was wandering the streets in a long sleeve t-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes without socks. Never know what you might see downtown Midway. ... As I have stated before, Midway is very fortunate to have a school like Northside Elementary School right at our back door. I have also commented how hard the teachers and others in the school work to make Northside special. I need to add that the parents of the Northside students are a special group of people. Midway being the town that it is, I know there are several if not a lot of Midwegians who would like to pitch in and help out with the school's next project. They are raising money for their Northside Elementary Music/Theater Program 2017. Their goal for this year is $3,000 and if everyone in Midway donated $3 they could have that covered in no time - or maybe 100 people give $35 - both scenarios would give them a jump on next year. Unlike the government, except for the Midway City Council, the group can tell you how the money will be used. The group needs a stage and they will use $1,000 to purchase two 4'x8' pieces of staging with adjustable legs. The cost of one set of stairs with guard rails will run $500. Another $100 will be used to put a skirt around the stage to fancy everything up a bit. Of course, when they break everything down, the students will need some way to transport all this heavy stuff to the storage areas. A transportation trolley will run $250. So now you have an idea how the money will be used. I'm asking everyone to help get the Northside Elementary School's show on the road and donate. You can donate online at https://app.snap-raise.com/fundraisers/23846, and help create the next Midway star. ... Girl Scout Troop #1913 is building bat houses and they need your help. They would like for you to go online and complete some survey questions at https://surveynuts.com/surveys/take?id=127582&c=2411299817PRVP. Remember that not all bats live in caves and Midway doesn't actually have any caves in town, so the placement of bat houses would be beneficial in that the houses would encourage bats to hang out around Midway. You may ask yourself why would we want these fuzzy mice with wings darting over our city and I would answer the question with another question. Would you rather be bitten several hundred times a year by mosquitoes through the year or bring in some bats and save your arms and other exposed parts of your body? Did you know that one little brown bat can eat 60 medium-sized moths or over 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in one night? I'll keep you updated as the project progresses. ... I am sure my Irish grandmother would want to wish everyone a grand Saint Patrick's Day this Friday. Her favorite Saint Paddy saying was, "St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic."
