WCHS boys’ and girls tennis defeat Tates Creek

The Woodford County High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams hosted Tates Creek at the Falling Springs tennis complex on Monday, April 17, and both teams walked away with victories. The boys’ team defeated the Commodores 4-0, while the girls’ team won 3-2. In singles for the boys, Evan Bentley defeated Hunter Gregg, 6-2, 6-4, while Evan Spradlin defeated Jose Guijosa, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Mason McIntyre and Max Wade defeated Keegan Lockhart and Mahammad Shelash, 6-1, 6-3, and Zach Stiefel and Ben Ison defeated Dominic Robinette and Adam Shelash, 6-0, 6-1. In the girls’ competition, Addison Beck defeated Maya Reddy, 6-2, 6-0, Reagan Jobe dispatched Olivia Burke, 6-3, 6-1, and, in a late match, Hannah Brady defeated Shania Jones, 7-5. In doubles, Allison Miller and Caroline Miller lost to Allie Sither and Ellen Harrington, 6-0, 6-3, and Ellington King and Sophie Wingo defeated Leigh Jones and Hannah Isa, 6-0, 4-6, and 10-4 in a tiebreaker. In previous action for the girls’ team, Woodford traveled to Sayre on Thursday, April 13, and won 4-1. In singles, Beck defeated Jade Adams, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), while Wingo lost to Olivia Bargeron, 6-0, 6-4. In doubles, Nicole Feldner and Alyssa Feldner defeated Kate Christensen and Monique Baha, 3-6, 6-3, and 10-4 in a tiebreaker. Also, Caroline Miller and Allison Miller defeated Elisa McKinney and Kat Backer, 6-3, 6-3, while Katie Batman and Hinzee Smith defeated Ellie Webb and Maha Libal, 4-6, 6-2, (10-8) in a tiebreaker. In previous action for the boys’ team, Woodford hosted Scott County on Tuesday, April 11, and lost 6-1. In singles, Bentley lost to S. Jones, 6-0, 6-2; Spradlin lost to D. Renfrow, 6-1, 6-4; Joe Kowalke lost to B. Siler, 6-1, 6-3; and Eli Smith lost to H. Takedo, 8-4. In doubles, McIntyre and Wade scored the Racket Jackets’ only win on the day when they defeated P. Turner and C. Rice, 6-1, 6-2. In the other doubles matches, Ison and Stiefel lost to B. Jones and I. Adams, 6-4, 6-1; and Opel Chaikampa and Eli Smith lost to Takedo and E. Martin, 8-2. Then on Wednesday, April 12, Woodford went to Lexington and defeated Bryan Station, 4-1. In singles, Bentley lost to Ian Waltor, 6-2, 6-3; Spradlin defeated Stephan Wilder, 8-0; and Kowalke defeated Dylan Tellman by forfeit. In doubles, McIntyre and Wade defeated Matt Hunt and Brandon Johnson, 6-1, 6-0, while Ison and Stiefel defeated Mark Smith and Rickey Spencer, 6-2, 6-0. The boys’ team closed out their week at Sayre on Thursday, April 13, and came home the winners, 3-2. In singles, Bentley lost to Shane Landis, 6-0, 6-1; Spradlin defeated Robert Bratton, 7-5, 6-1; and Kowalke defeated Moshin Akhtar, 7-6(7-1), 6-2. In doubles, McIntrye and Wade defeated Reade Smith and Theo Taylor, 7-6(7-5), 6-1; and Ison and Stiefel lost to Marshall Nielsen and Parker Dean, 7-6(8-6), 5-7, 13-11. Both teams travel to play at Dunbar today, Thursday, April 20, at 4:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, April 22, they play in the John Harnice tournament in Frankfort at 8 a.m. The girls will host Lexington Catholic on Monday, April 24, while the boys’ team will host Lexington Catholic on Tuesday, April 25. Start times are 4:30 p.m. Both teams play at home against Bryan Station on Wednesday, April 26, at 4:30 p.m.; and Sayre on Thursday, April 27 at 4:30 a.m. Woodford then holds its annual Woodford County Invitational on Saturday, April 29, at 8 a.m. Scheduled to play are Scott County, Lexington Catholic and Western Hills.
