WCHS boys’ tennis wins five straight; girls go

Prior to the Woodford County High School tennis teams hosting their annual WCI tennis tournament on Saturday, April 29, the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams played in five meets, with the boys winning all five and the girls finished 2-2-1. In that stretch, the boys’ team defeated Dunbar, Lafayette, Lexington Catholic, Bryan Station and Sayre, while the girls defeated Dunbar and Bryan Station, lost to Lexington Catholic and Scott County, and tied Sayre. Here are the results. Boys’ Results On April 20, Woodford played at Dunbar and won the match, 3-2. In singles, Evan Spradlin defeated Harrison Weyland, 8-3; Ben Ison defeated Hunter Whitehouse, 8-6; and Joe Kowalke lost to Rehan Ghanta, 8-4. In doubles, Mason McIntyre and Max Wade defeated Ashwin Kammeni and Hemouth Jantenaui, 8-6, and Opel Vitsarut and Eli Smith defeated Matthew Hagwood and Jai P., 8-3. Then on April 21, Woodford hosted Lafayette and won 4-2. In singles, Spradlin lost to Matthew Mitchell, 6-4, 5-1; Ison defeated Luke Pellegrino, 6-1, 6-2; and Kowalke defeated James Yang, 6-1, 6-0. Then in doubles, McIntyre and Wade defeated Caleb Johns and Benjamin Adair, 6-3, 6-0, while Vitsarut and Smith defeated Sy Jagannathan and Josh Arnold, 6-2, 3-6, 13-11. Next up for the Racket Jackets, they hosted Lexington Catholic and defeated them 5-4. In singles, Spradlin defeated Travis True, 8-3; Zack Steifel defeated Collin Loxley, 8-4; Ison defeated Victor Wei, 8-6; and Kowalke defeated Victor Wei, 8-3. In doubles, Spradlin and Kowalke won their match on a default to seal Woodford’s team victory. On April 26, in a shortened match, Woodford hosted Bryan Station and won 2-1. In singles, there was only one match in the meet and Evan Bentley defeated Ian Walton, 6-0, 6-3. In doubles, McIntyre and Wade defeated Mark Smith and Mat Hung, 6-1, 6-2; while Spradlin and Stiefel defeated Stephen Wilder and Ricky Spencer, 6-0, 6-1. In their final match before the WCI, Woodford hosted Sayre on April 27, and won the meet, 3-2. In singles, Bentley defeated Theo Taylor, 8-5; Smith lost to Shane Landis, 8-0; and Drew Blaydes won his match by a default. In doubles, McIntyre and Wade lost to Marshall Nielsen and Parker Dun, 8-4, while Stiefel and Ison defeated Robert Bratton and Mohsin Akhtar, 8-4 to seal the team victory.

Girls’ Results On April 20, Woodford was on the road and defeated Dunbar, 4-1.

In singles, Addison Beck defeated Jennifer Lee, 8-1, while Reagan Jobe defeated Sharlena Wang, 8-3. In doubles, Caroline Miller and Allison Miller defeated Krista Wamba and Deepshu B., 8-5; and Ellington King and Sophie Wingo defeated Maggie Fan and Elizabeth George, 8-4. Then on April 24, the Racket Jackets hosted Lexington Catholic and lost 7-4. In singles, Alysa Feldner defeated Grace McMillian, 8-3; and Ellington King defeated Sara Simon-Patches, 8-2. However, Beck lost to Madison Miller, 9-8(8-6); Jobe fell to Kiley Mair, 8-3; Nicole Feldner lost to Sarah Farrell, 8-3; Caroline Miller lost to Elizabeth Herbert-Jones, 8-6; and Isabella Sarrantonio lost to Elizabeth Herbert Jones, 8-0. In doubles, Beck and Jobe defeated Alana Kassis and Anna Montgomery 8-3, and Allison Miller and Katie Batman defeated Sarah Simon Patches and Grace McMillian, 8-1. Also, Feldner and Feldner lost to Madison Miller and Kiley Mair, 8-0 and Kassie Cook and Wingo lost to Christian Corales and Katherine Youkilis, 8-6. The next match was at home on April 26, where Woodford defeated Bryan Station, 3-0. In singles, Beck defeated Auynne Shields, 6-2, 6-0; while in doubles, Feldner and Feldner defeated Jazmyn Burke and Karine Mosa, 6-0, 6-0; and Jobe and King defeated Aleya Taste and Riley Bellomy, 6-0, 6-0. Next up for Woodford was a 3-3 tie at home against Sayre on April 27. In singles, Beck fell to Caroline Hager, 8-0; and Jobe lost to Jade Adams, 8-2. Woodford bounced back in doubles, where Feldner and Feldner defeated Kate Christensen and Olivia Bargeron, 8-1; Miller and Miller defeated Audrey Kwan and Kat Backer, 8-4; and King and Wingo defeated Ellie Webb and Rohma Akhtar, 8-3. In the final double match, Hinzee Smith and Sophie Edelen lost to Grace Marcella and Maha Lqbal, 8-5. Woodford travelled to Georgetown on April 28 for its final match before the WCI, and lost to Scott County, 5-0. In singles, Jobe lost to Carlee Deney, 8-0; King lost to Jordyn Salyers, 8-4; and Wingo fell to Caon Atres, 8-6. In doubles, Felder and Feldner lost to Lauren Moore and Grace Gardner, 8-0; and Miller and Miller lost o Raven Jones and Megan Moore, 8-0.
