Midway News - Personals and Comments

Remember Linus in the Charlie Brown cartoon episodes on TV? Linus is the one with blanket. He also the one in the Charlie Brown series that is ridiculed each year by his friend Patty, his sister, Lucy, and even the famous dog Snoopy laughs at Linus when he sits down each year and writes his letter to the Great Pumpkin. Linus tells his friends that the Great Pumpkin will come to his pumpkin patch because he has the most-sincere pumpkin patch and the Great Pumpkin respects sincerity. Charlie Brown's sister, Sally Brown asked, "Do you think he will really come?" Linus goes on with his story, "Tonight the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch. He flies through the air and brings toys to all the children of the world." Sally Brown: "That's a good story." It seems that the Great Pumpkin will be in Midway this year as visitors to Midway will be able to watch the "Great Pumpkin" grow right before their eyes. There is no doubt that Midway has the most-sincere pumpkin patch in the world. While most pumpkins grow from the ground, the Midway pumpkins will be growing from two specially treated straw bales that are located on the north side and the east end of Railroad Street in the gathering area between the Morgan at Midway and Sue Mundy Here signs. How big will Midway's Great Pumpkin be? As of yet, no one really knows but he will probably be between 300 and 600 pounds and he will be surrounded by pumpkin helpers weighing in at 50 to 100 pounds. The Midway Great Pumpkin will also be honoring UK as there will be some blue pumpkins at the little Midway pumpkin patch. ... Okay, I will quit bragging about Midway's soon-to-be the biggest pumpkin in the Bluegrass Region and brag about an award that Northside Elementary School just received. The school took third place in the first ever Kentucky's Battle of the School Buildings competition, sponsored by the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). Schools were placed based on their energy reduction between 2015 and 2016. There were 131 schools that entered the inaugural competition. The top 10 schools in the state were: 1. Southside Elementary, Woodford County, 24.68 percent. 2. Bourbon County Central Elementary, Bourbon County, 24.51 percent. 3. Northside Elementary, Woodford County, 22.73 percent. 4. Fairview Elementary School, Fairview Independent, 19.80 percent. 5. South Irvine P/K Center, Estill County, 14.40 percent. 6. Garth Elementary, Scott County, 13.73 percent. 7. Straub Elementary School, Mason County, 12.88 percent. 8. Bourbon County Preschool Head Start, Bourbon County, 12.07 percent. 9. Estill County Middle School, Estill County, 10.42 percent. 10. Safe Harbor, Woodford County, 9.55 percent. Yes, I see where Versailles's Southside took first place but that's another town in Woodford County. In my world, it's all about Midway. ... Downtown Midway has had a few stores that have "been around for a spell" as my Irish grandmother used to say. The owner of the downtown shop Breckinridge, Katie Comely, was recognized last Wednesday when Midway Mayor Grayson Vandegrift joined Midway business owner Pat Logan, MBA President Peggy Angel, City Council Member John McDaniel, and MBA membership chair Steve Morgan to presented Comley with a proclamation declaring that day as "Breckinridge Day." ... I want to remind everyone that a free CPR class will be taking place at The Homeplace Thursday July 20. The classes will be held at the facilities gathering room. The class is limited to 10 people. If interested, RSVP by July 13 to Steve Morgan at 859-552-1377 or morganstv01@gmail.com. The Homeplace is located in Midway 101 Sexton Way on Weisenberger Mill Road near Midway University. ... Northside kindergarten screening will take place Aug. 1 from 8 to 6 and is by appointment. This is a district-wide change from past years. The screenings are scheduled in 30-minute blocks. If you haven't scheduled an appointment yet, call school office. If you have made an appointment, you will be given a courtesy call a few days prior.
