Eagles defeat Shawnee State for second consecutive victory
The Midway University men's tennis team picked up its second victory in a row on Saturday, Oct. 7, when the Eagles defeated Shawnee State (Ohio) at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center. The Eagles made quick work of the Bears, winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. In singles play, Midway won four of the six matches to walk away with the 7-2 victory over the visiting Bears. Getting the Eagles started off right was the junior duo of Hugo Retortillo and Jared Smith. Retortillo and Smith defeated Rodney Spriggs and Zach Colley by a final score of 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Jacob Sergent and Jacob Franke stretched the lead to 2-0. The freshman pair grabbed an early lead and held on for the 8-5 win over C.J. Burk and Nate Hinze. Jahn Oetzel and Dustin Johnson made it a clean sweep in doubles after an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Oetzel and Johnson defeated Shane Hitchens and Case Ward to give Midway a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. After the Bears picked up their first point of the match by kicking off singles action with a win at No. 4 singles, Hugo Retortillo moved Midway one step closer to clinching the match. The junior won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Rodney Spriggs to push the lead to 4-1. Jared Smith clinched the match for the Eagles with a win at No. 2 singles. After a back-and-forth first set that Smith won 6-4, the junior won handily in the second set 6-2 to clinch the match for the Eagles. With the match in hand, Dustin Johnson and Jahn Oetzel won at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Johnson won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Caleb Moore, while Oetzel won 6-3, 6-3 over Shane Hitchens. The Bears won the match's final game at No. 3 singles, but Midway walked away with the 7-2 victory. With the win over Shawnee State, the Eagles improve to 2-1 as they wrap up the fall season and will spend the next couple of months preparing for the spring portion of the schedule.
