First Baptist to host ‘Unity in the Community’ on Nov. 17

Andrea "Bug" Brown

People in the community will come together at First Baptist Church on Friday, Nov. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m., to show their love for one each other and support for first-responders. “Unity in the Community” organizer Andrea “Bug” Brown described the most recent mass shooting at a small, rural church in Texas, as a reminder that “we’ve got to be one in our community, and look out for each other. “Race, gender should not matter because Heaven is not going to be segregated. I think I’m going to have (those words put) on my tombstone. That’s how profound and for real I am about it.” Since the inaugural Unity in the Community in August 2016, various Woodford County churches have hosted the program celebrating togetherness. “For those who are able to open up their doors for us,” said Brown, “I like to rotate (Unity in the Community) between our churches in our community to emphasize we are one in our community and we’ve got to stand together.” Three pastors will speak at the upcoming Unity in the Community, according to Brown. She said Woodford County High School graduate Dr. Derrick Briscoe will be joined by Jody Short, pastor at Glen’s Creek Baptist Church, and Miguel Alvizures, St. Leo Catholic Church’s priest. “I get excited about each (Unity in the Community),” said Brown, “because they’re all different. Before I even (begin to) prepare for the next one, God is speaking to me. “He’ll lead me to where I need to have it. He’ll also lead me to who He wants to preach it and who to invite to sing … Everything just kind of falls into place.” And she said the first-responders never grow tired of seeing and hearing the support from people in their community, “because they need the prayers. They’re out there every single day, and their lives are on the line – every single day. “And so I don’t take that lightly that somebody’s trying to protect me or my community … So I pray for their families every day. And I pray for our community every day.” First Baptist Church is located at 233 South Main Street in downtown Versailles.
