WCHS Cross Country competes at State Championship

Thousands of spectators converged on the Kentucky Horse Park Saturday November 4th for the State Cross Country championships. Woodford County High School competed as a team in the boys Class 3A championship and Katie Gatewood represented Woodford in the girls Class 3A championship. The course was a tough challenge for the top runners in the commonwealth. The grass was wet from heavy fog in the morning and led to slick conditions up and down the hills of the course.

“It's tough and you feel like you are boxed in with no room to move around,” said Kyle Holt. “The course gets used hard by the other divisions who ran before us. It is nice to face top competition and as a sophomore it's nice to have this chance. Hopefully we can get back again as upperclassmen.”

Gatewood was cheerful after competing in the State final as a freshman. Gatewood finished 124th out of 276 competitors.

“It's a lot of fun out here but a little scary also,” said Gatewood. “I've never raced with so many people at once. I hope I can come back again and improve on my time. I have a great time being a part of this team. It's a family atmosphere and we really enjoy each other as a team.”

Peter McGowan was the top finisher for the Jackets boys' team. McGowan has had a season full of top 15 finishes and the senior ran in his final race finishing 128th overall.

“This is my second time at States,” said McGowan. “It's been great this season because we all helped push each other to get to this race. I feel like it was a great senior season and I am glad to be part of this experience with this team.”
