Midway men’s basketball cruises to big win past Ohio-Chillicothe

Georgetown, Ky. -- The Midway University men’s basketball team put an end to their two-game losing streak on Saturday, Nov. 18, defeating Ohio-Chillicothe in their final game of the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic hosted by Georgetown.

Joe Krupinski’s team took a 52-23 lead into the locker room and then in the second half outscored the Hilltoppers 50-43 on their way to a 102-66 win. With the win, Midway is now 3-4 on the season going into the Thanksgiving holiday.

Offensively Midway had one of their best outings of the season shooting 47.7 percent (42-88) and 41.4 percent from behind the arc where they went 12-for-29. Meanwhile, Midway’s defense forced the Hilltoppers into 31.5 percent (23-73) shooting overall and 22.2 percent (8-36)on threes.

Midway got off to a hot start to begin the game as they were up 30-8 less than nine minutes into the opening half. After Ohio-Chillicothe cut the lead to 20, 41-21, in the half, Midway closed with an 11-2 run on their way to a 52-23 lead at intermission.

Right after the halftime break, Midway got a triple from Ty Sparling (Kokomo, Ind.) to push the lead over 30 points at 55-23. The Eagles led by as many as 36 in the second half on their way to a 102-66 win over the Hilltoppers.

The Eagles had four players finish in double figures led by Sparling, who poured in a career-high 14 points. DJ Townsend (Georgetown, Ky.) added 13, while Bryson Harris (Louisville, Ky.) and Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) pitched in with 12 and 10, respectively.

After getting dominated in the rebounding department on Friday at Washington Adventist (Md.), the Eagles held a 61-35 edge against Ohio-Chillicothe, including a 16-7 advantage on the offensive end. Those 16 offensive rebounds for Midway turned into 21 second-chance points.

Krupinski’s team will now take a 10 day break to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday as Midway opens River States Conference play on Nov. 28 against Indiana University Southeast at7:30 p.m. ET. Then on Nov.29 they travel to Miami (Ohio) for an exhibition before taking on Brescia (Ky.) in Owensboro, Ky. on Saturday, Dec. 2.
