Mat Jackets win WCI

The WCHS wrestling team won their third straight tournament of the season on Saturday, Dec. 30. The Jackets were impressive all weekend with seven wrestlers qualifying for the semifinals. Six wrestlers fought their way into the finals and clinched the win for the Jackets at the 46th annual WC Invitational.

“We are definitely on a roll right now,” said WCHS Coach Rusty Parks. “Three wins in a row in three extremely difficult tournaments. To win the largest tournament in Kentucky that happens to be in your home gym, that is special to us. We had one win out of six in the finals. It was good enough to win as a team but I know some of the individuals will not be satisfied with their result and it will further motivate them to win the next time out.”

The Mat Jackets also hosted senior night as part of the WCI. Jack Hill, Adam Bender, Tylan Tucker and Pablo Companioni were honored before the final matches at the tournament.

Woodford County Black (1st place) 106 pound weight class

Gavin Andreoni (17-6) placed second and scored 25.5 team points.

In round one, Andreoni won by fall over Matthew Rowe (Grant County). In round two, Andreoni won by technical fall over Connor Dutton (Woodford County Gold) . In the Quarterfinal, Andreoni won by decision over David Gerkin (Apollo). In the semifinal, Andreoni won by fall over Jack McCubbin (South Oldham). In the first place match, Gage Fowler (Christian County) won by major decision over Andreoni.

113 pound weight class

Adam Bender (13-4) placed second and scored 21.5 team points.

In round one , Bender won by fall over Anthony Wolford (Grant County). The quarterfinals match was dominated by Bender as he won by technical fall over Ruben Martinez (McCreary Central). In the semifinal , Bender won by decision over Joseph Morgan (Apollo). In the first place match, Thomas Hoppes (Larue Co) won by decision over Bender . “It's amazing to watch Bender get out there and do what he does,” said Parks. “He works incredibly hard and he wants to be the best.” “This tournament is special to me because I've made it to the finals all four years,” said Bender. “The Woodford County fans really get into it and we feed off of their energy. We love that the alumni keep coming back to watch us and having their support means a lot to us.”

120 pound weight class

Dylan Preston (20-5) placed third and scored 21 team points.

In round one, Preston received a bye. In round two, Preston won by fall over Dylan Crouch (Central Hardin). Preston lost by major decision in the quarterfinal to Preston Mattingly (Apollo). In the consolation round, Preston won by major decision over Isaac French (Bourbon County). In round five, Preston won by decision over Jarret Sanders (Ashland). In the consolation semifinals, Preston won by forfeit over Tyler Storck (Henry Clay). Preston won by decision over Brody Smith (Coahulla Creek HIgh School) in the third place match.

126 pound weight class

Tylan Tucker (21-3) placed first and scored 31 team points.

Tucker started the tournament on fire, pinning his first three opponents. In round one, Tucker won by fall over Christian Geer (North Oldham). In round two, Tucker won by fall over Brennan Caron (Ashland). In the quarterfinal , Tucker won by fall over Jabin Hite (Larue Co.). Tucker won by decision over Dillion Burton (Newport) in the semifinal match. In the finals, Tucker won by major decision over Brad Miller (Taylor Co.). “Tucker has great composure,” said Parks. “He is a very technical wrestler and has tremendous work ethic. Tucker is a very good kid but he is a tremendous athlete.”

132 pound weight class

CJ Cardwell (16-3) placed second and scored 26 team points.

After a first round bye, Cardwell dominated his next three matches before losing by decision in the finals. In round two, Cardwell won by fall over Luke Anderson (McCreary Central). In the quarterfinals, Cardwell won by fall over Thomas Bryant (Coahulla Creek HIgh School). In the semifinal, CJ Cardwell won by fall over Truman Galusha. In the first place match, Jakerion Merritt (Christian County) won by decision over Cardwell.

138 pound weight class

Ronan Wyatt (17-8) placed third and scored 21 team points.

Wyatt received a bye in the first round and won by fall over Cameron Baker (Apollo) in the second round. In the quarterfinal, Josh Smith (Coahulla Creek HIgh School) won by decision over Wyatt in a closely-contended match. In the consolation round four, Wyatt won by major decision over Justin Chavez (Lafayette) and won by fall over Jackson Grimsley (Taylor Co) in round five.In the consolation round semifinals, Wyatt won by decision over Anthony Pierce (South Oldham).Wyatt won the third place match by decision over Ishmael Griffie (Christian County) and received a thunderous applause from the Woodford County crowd. “As a team we look really solid right now,” said Wyatt. “When you look up and see all of those state champions on the wall in this gym, it humbles you because you know all of the sacrifice it took to get there. That is motivation every day for us.”

152 pound weight class

Wyatt Andreoni (20-5) placed second and scored 25.00 team points.

In the first round, Andreoni won by decision over Kyle Mardis (Newport). Andreoni won by fall over Timmy Moore (Grant County) in the second round and won by fall over Bryce Breeden (Winfield) in the quarterfinals. Andreoni won by major decision over Dalton Bell (Larue Co) in the semifinals. In the first place match, Kevin Vasquez (Lafayette) won by major decision over Andreoni.

152 pound weight class

Andrew Kartner (2-2) did not place. In the first round, Jamez Chavez (Woodford County Gold) won by decision over Kartner. In the consolation first round, Kartner received a bye . In the consolation second round, Kartner won by fall over Logan Richie (Anderson Co.) and won by decision over Joseph Lucas(Western) in the third round. In the consolation third round, Zlatko Skuljan (Hopkinsville) won by fall over Kartner.

160 pound weight class

Triston Brooks (19-6) placed second and scored 23 team points. In round one, Brooks won by fall over Matthew Kuhn (Anderson Co). Brooks won by decision over Mason Hall (South Oldham) in round two and won by decision over Jay Hall (Winfield) in round three.In the semifinals, Brooks won by major decision over Tristan Kelley (Coahulla Creek HIgh School). In the finals match, Derrick Smallwood (John Hardin) won by fall over Brooks.

“It's fun to come out here and battle in a tournament that has such a long history,” said Brooks. “The team works so hard and we hope we made people proud.”

170 pound weight class

Tony Ornelas (10-14) placed sixth and scored 9 team points. Ornelas received a bye in the first round and won by decision over O`Rielly McGuire (Coahulla Creek HIgh School) in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Ornelas won by decision over John Paredes (Caldwell County). Chance Dixon (Winfield) won by decision over Ornelas in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Thomas Boone (Larue Co.) won by decision over Ornelas. In the fifth place match, Noah Rhode (Lafayette) won by major decision over Ornelas.

182 pound weight class

Will Smithers (4-4) scored 7 team points. In the first round, Cedric Dixon (Henry Clay) won by decision over Smithers. In the opening consolation round, Smithers received a bye and won by fall over Alex Rangle (Western) in round two. In consolation round three, Smithers won by fall over Craig Eastmon (Perry County Central). In consolation round four, Issac Johnson (Larue Co.) won by fall over Smithers.

195 pound weight class

Mason Smith (4-6) scored 4 team points. Smith received a bye in round one and won by decision over Dominic Hope (John Hardin) in round two. In the quarterfinals, Alex Hale (Winfield) won by fall over Smith and Smith lost by fall to Tyler Little (Scott County) in the consolation match.

220 pound weight class

Jack Hill (17-9) placed sixth and scored 13 team points. Hill received a bye in the opening round and won by fall over Jak Kuhl (Winfield) in the second round. Daniel Lopez (Coahulla Creek HIgh School) won by fall over Hill in the quarterfinals. In consolation round four, Hill won by fall over Jack Lehman (Central Hardin). In consolation round five, Hill won by decision over Mason Boggs (Lafayette) and then lost by fall to Nathan Prosser (McCreary Central) in the consolation round semifinals. In the fifth place match, Markus Green (Christian County) won by decision over Hill in a match that featured both athletes crashing over the scoring table. “Jack Hill, for his size, is one of the best athletes I have seen in a long time,” said Parks. “Jack fights with his big heart and will always be a tough match-up for anyone on the mat.”

“It's a great feeling to be able to have this event here and wrestle in front of family and friends,” said Hill. “It was wild watching senior night during my freshman year and now it's here. This has been a great weekend.”

285 pound weight class

Maquoia Bernabe (3-8) scored 2 team points. In round one, John Stone (Ashland) won by decision over Bernabe. In round one of the consolation round, Bernabe received a bye and then won in overtime over Samuel Tomah (Spencer County) in the consolation second round. Tanner Issacs (Grant County) won by fall over Bernabe in the consolation third round. “It's amazing to see a young lady go out and battle so hard every match,” said Parks. “Seeing the emotion that Maquoia let out after her win today was incredible. All of that hard work and pushing herself was worth it for that moment of getting her arm raised.”

Ashley Courtney (9-9) scored 7 team points. In round one, Gage Fowler (Christian County) won by fall over Courtney. In consolation round one, Courtney received a bye and won by fall over Corey Westover (Larue Co.) in consolation round two. In round three, Courtney won by fall over Joe Miele (Woodford County Gold). In consolation round four, Dyson Bowers (Winfield) won by fall over Courtney.
