Enlow scores 1,000th point in Lady Jackets’ loss to Franklin County
The Lady Lady Jackets were beaten on the road by Franklin County, 63-34, on Thursday, Jan. 11. The district matchup was lopsided from the opening minute of the game. Franklin County jumped out to a 10-0 lead and held the Jackets scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. The lead grew to 20 points and the Lady Jackets could not muster a comeback.
In the first quarter, despite a few blocks by sophomore Delaney Enlow, the Woodford defense was helpless in stopping the Lady Flyer attack. On the offensive end, the Lady Jackets turned the ball over at a high rate and that led to chances for Franklin County to score. Sophomore Kayla Harlow scored the first five points for the Lady Jackets. Harlow has come on strong for the Lady Jackets in the last month providing size and a nice touch around the basket. Franklin County hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter with a 15-5 lead.
“As soon as Delaney (Enlow) touched the ball, they just swarmed her,” said WCHS Coach Steve Jaco. “We have to find a way to find the open shooter when that happens. There were three bodies smacking at the ball when she caught it in the post. They were very physical with us down low and we need to be ready for that kind of play. We will be working on that at practice, I guarantee that.”
Sophomore Abby Moffett picked up her second foul of the game in the opening seconds on the second quarter. Moffett, joined senior point guard Peyton Rose and sophomore Abbie Hudson with a pair of fouls each. Franklin County started the quarter on a 10-2 run and led 25-7. After a Woodford timeout, Harlow scored again in the post to stop the bleeding for the Lady Jackets. Freshman Devan Champion scored on a jumpshot late in the quarter to bring the score to 28-11 at the half.
The third quarter started with the Lady Flyers going on a 7-1 run in the first two minutes of play. Enlow scored in the post and then was one out of two from the free throw line to score the 999th point of her high school career. Hudson hit a three from the left corner and Champion made a pair of free throws. After a Lady Flyer timeout, Moffett hit a three-pointer to cut the Franklin County lead to 17 points. Enlow scored her 1,000th and 1,001st point on the next possession when she made a jump shot over a pair of Lady Flyer defenders. The Lady Flyers called timeout and the PA announcer acknowledged Enlow's achievement to the crowd. Franklin County ended the quarter on a 8-2 run and led by 23 points at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, both teams played their reserves for much of the final minutes. Freshman point guard Ellie Dougherty scored on a terrific drive to the basket where she crossed over a pair of Lady Flyer defenders. The Lady Jackets will host the next four games on their schedule.
