WCHS wrestling finishes third at James Horning Memorial Tournament

The Mat Jackets finished third at the 14th annual James Horning memorial wrestling tournament in Mason, Ohio on Jan. 20. The tournament was the last out of state event of the season for the varsity team. The Jackets are currently preparing for the sectional tournament on Jan. 24 at North Oldham high school in hopes of qualifying for the state dual championship on Saturday, Jan. 27.

113-pound weight class

Adam Bender finished third in the tournament.

Bender won his first match by technical fall but lost his second match by a score of 4-2. Bender won his third-place match by technical fall.

120-pound weight class

Dylan Preston finished fourth in the tournament.

Preston won his first match by major decision and won by pin in the third round. Preston lost by technical fall in the fifth round and lost by major decision in the third-place match.

126-pound weight class

Tylan Tucker finished second in the tournament.

Tucker started the tournament on fire as he pinned his first three opponents of the event. Tucker lost in the finals by decision, 10-4.

132-pound weight class

CJ Cardwell finished sixth in the tournament.

Cardwell won his first round match by fall and had a bye in the second round. Cardwell lost his third round match in a close 6-4 decision. Cardwell forfeited his remaining two matches.

138-pound weight class

Chase Yost finished fourth in the tournament.

Yost won his first match by pin and then won by major decision in the third round. Yost lost by major decision in the fifth round and lost by a score of 8-5 in the third-place match.

145-pound weight class

Ronan Wyatt finished fifth in the tournament.

Wyatt won his first match by fall, but lost by technical fall in round two. In round three, Wyatt won by technical fall. In the fifth round, Wyatt was defeated by major decision. Wyatt won by pin in the fifth-place match.

152-pound weight class

Wyatt Andreoni finished third in the tournament.

Andreoni won his first round match by technical fall and received a bye for the next three rounds. In round five, Andreoni lost a close 6-4 decision. Andreoni won the third-place match by fall.

160-pound weight class

Triston Brooks finished fourth in the tournament.

Brooks won his first two matches by fall and received a bye into the fifth round. Brooks lost a nail biter by decision, 5-4, in the fifth round. In the third-place match, Brooks lost by decision.

170-pound weight class

Tony Ornelas finished fifth in the tournament.

Ornelas received a bye in the first round and was pinned in the second round. Ornelas bounced back with a a 9-2 win in the third round. In the fourth round Ornelas was pinned but won his fifth round match by fall. In the fifth-place match, Ornelas won by major decision.

182-pound weight class

Will Smithers finished sixth in the tournament.

Smithers lost his first two matches by fall. In the third round, Smithers was defeated by technical fall and lost by major decision in the fourth round. In the fifth-place match, Smithers was pinned.

195-pound weight class

Mason Smith finished sixth in the tournament.

Smith lost by fall in his five matches at the event.

220-pound weight class

Jack Hill finished fifth in the tournament.

Hill lost his first match by a close 6-5 decision. Hill rallied back and won his next match by fall and received a bye into the fifth round. In round five, Hill was pinned. In the fifth-place match, Hill won by fall.

285-pound weight class

Seth Spaulding finished sixth for the Jackets

Spaulding lost by fall in his three matches on the day.
