4-H/Youth Development - Numerous benefits to joining 4-H camp staff
Source: Darrell Stillwell, principal extension specialist for 4-H camping
Being a member of summer camp staff is a great opportunity for young people to grow their leadership skills and challenge themselves.
The 4-H Camping Program is recruiting staff members for this year.
Camp staff serve as positive role models for younger youth. They get to share their knowledge and skills with 4-Hers as they lead them through different activities throughout the day. Staff serve as confidants and the voice of reason for 4-Hers as they work through challenging situations that can arise at camp such as homesickness, conflict or other problems. As a result, camp staff members grow their communication and problem-solving skills.
The job also gives young people the ability to really discover themselves. During camp, they will learn how to work with others with diverse backgrounds and interests, take responsibility and discover their leadership style. While one of the major functions of camp staff is to help ensure everyone has a fun, safe time at camp, many find they get more out of the experience of helping others than they receive.
Many develop lifelong friendships with their fellow staff members. Not only that, but all of this occurs in a fun, relaxed environment.
