Mat Jackets finish fifth at State Duals

The WCHS Mat Jackets placed fifth at the State Duals on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Lindsey Wilson College. The Jackets rolled to a win over their first round opponent but were beaten by the No. 1 team in the state, Saint Xavier in the second round. The Jackets battled back and won their remaining two duals to finish in fifth place.

Woodford defeated Meade County 63-18 in the opening round. In the first match of the day, Gavin Andreoni defeated David Griffith in the 106-pound weight class. Adam Bender beat Levi Stull by technical fall in the 113-pound weight class. Dylan Preston won by fall over Caileb Hills in the 120-pound weight class. In the 126-pound weight class, Tylan Tucker pinned Hunter Butler to give the Jackets four straight convincing wins. CJ Cardwell won his 132-pound weight class match by forfeit. Chase Yost pinned Connor Geise in the 138-pound weight class and Ronan Wyatt pinned Collin Morris in the 145-pound matchup. Wyatt Andreoni won by fall over Cole Wilson in 44 seconds in the 152-pound weight class. Tony Ornelas pinned Gavin Burns in the 160-pound weight class to give the Jackets nine straight wins in the dual. The Jackets forfeited the 170 and 182-pound matches. Mason Smith won the 195-pound match by forfeit and Seth Spaulding pinned Austin Boehler in the heavyweight division.

Less than 10 minutes after the Meade County dual, the Jackets were back on the mat facing the No. 1 ranked team in the state, Saint Xavier. In the first match, Bender won by technical fall over Nathan Ohlmann in the 113-pound match. Preston won a 6-4 decision over Issac Pledger in the 120-pound weight class. Tucker pinned Zachary Pledger in the first round of the 126-pound match, and let out a big scream to the Woodford bench after his hand was raised. Nathaniel Wheeler won by fall over Reece Goss in the final five seconds of the 132-pound match. Goss was on the defensive the entire match and nearly escaped without being pinned. Cardwell won a 6-5 decision over Kenton Darbro in the 138-pound division. Cardwell scored two points on a reversal with 15-seconds remaining in the match to win. Clayton Fitzhugh won 6-4 over Yost in a fantastic matchup in the 145-pound weight class. Wyatt Andreoni won by a 14-10 decision over James Kraeszig in the 152-pound weight class. Ornelas was pinned by Konner Kraeszig in the first round of the 160-pound match. Juan Chavez was pinned by Cameron Ward in the 170-pound weight class. Triston Brooks was electric in his pin over Matthew Clemons in the 182-pound weight class. Brooks' pin came just 33 seconds into the match. Mason Smith was pinned in the first round by Benjamin Deprest in the 195-pound match. Seth Spaulding was pinned in the 220-pound matchup by Isaac Marrett. In the heavyweight division, Jack Hill won a 9-6 decision over Denis Diemer. In the final match, Gavin Andreoni was pinned in the second round of the 106-pound match by Jayssen Hanson. The Jackets lost the dual, 39-29.

In the third dual of the day, the Mat Jackets crushed Simon Kenton High School, 57-13. Gavin Andreoni won by fall over Landon Meadors in the 106-pound match. Bender won by technical fall over Eric Johnson in the 113-pound matchup. Preston won a 9-3 decision over Migdoel Ocasio in the 120-pound weight class. Tucker was superb again, winning his match over Brennon Conrad in the 126-pound division. Cardwell lost by major decision to Salim Mardis in the 132-pound match. Yost won a 8-7 decision over Alejandro Meija in the 138-pound weight class. Ronan Wyatt won by fall over Rictor Morgan in the 145-pound weight class. Wyatt Andreoni won by fall over Dakota Brooksbank in the 152-pound weight class. Ornelas won by fall over Josh Geiser in the 160-pound matchup. Brooks won by fall over Quincy North in the 170-pound matchup and Chavez pinned Andrew Clifford in the 182-pound match. Smith was pinned by Kyler Martin in the 195-pound match and Hill won the 220-pound match by forfeit. Mequoia Bernabe lost an 8-2 decision in the heavyweight match to Ian Hughes.

In the fifth place match, the Mat Jackets defeated McCracken County 37-29. Gavin Andreoni won by decision over Jayden Frazier in the 106-pound match. Bender won by technical fall over Michael Conner in the 113-pound matchup. Woodford forfeited the 120-pound match and Tucker won by fall in 36 seconds over Kolby Koepp in the 126-pound match. Goss lost a decision to Dylan Martin in the 132-pound weight class and Cardwell lost by decision to David Conner in the 138-pound match. Ronan Wyatt won by major decision over Colton Smallwood in the 145-pound match and Wyatt Andreoni won by fall over Jackson Grueber in the 152-pound weight class. Ornelas won by major decision over David Wallace in the 160-pound match. Brooks won by technical fall over Hunter Bradley in the 170-pound weight class. Woodford forfeited the 182-pound match and Smith was pinned in the 195-pound match by Logan Deasel. Bernabe lost by decision to Gavyn Davis in the 220-pound match. Hill won the heavyweight match by major decision over Esmond Morris.
