Historical society speaker shares research on USS Strong

The Woodford County Historical Society will meet tonight, Thursday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 at its museum, 121 Rose Hill Avenue. The program’s speaker will be Tammi Johnson of Project USS Strong DD-467.

After decades of research on this ship and its crew, Johnson is finally honoring her great-uncle, William C. Hedrick Jr., who served as an ensign and junior communications officer aboard the destroyer. He died while performing his duties on July 5, 1943, in the Solomon Islands.

A book by Stephen Harding, “The Castaway’s War,” details Johnson’s research and the survival of shipmate Hugh Barr Miller Jr. With 2018 being the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Strong and the increasing possibility of an expedition to find the destroyer,

Johnson is hopeful her research and Harding’s book brings the proper recognition to the ship and sacrifices of its crew. Guests, as well as Woodford Historical Society members, are invited to attend this free program.
