WCHS Jacketfish compete at state meet

The Jacketfish wrapped up their season on Saturday, Feb. 24 in Louisville at the KHSAA State Swim and Dive Championships.

In the girls' one meter dive, Chelsea Call finished 15th in the preliminaries and advanced to the semifinals where she came in 20th (232.00). Caitlin Cottingham placed 31st (132.00) in the preliminaries and did not advance.

William Slover placed 15th overall (342.05) in the boys' one meter dive championship. Slover was 15th in the preliminaries and 14th in the semifinals. Wade Young finished 21st (156.00) in the preliminaries and did not advance. Jack Shea finished 30th (138.90) and Caleb Evans finished 32nd (131.80).

“I'm so proud of my kids,” said WCHS dive Coach Patty Burchett. “We had six divers at state and three of them just started diving in October. If the rules were different, we could have sent more boys to the state meet. We had some talented kids this season and they all worked hard. I couldn't be more proud. Wade Young and William Slover both broke records this season and it seemed like each week one of them would break the school record again. So much fun to watch as a coach.”

Laura Crutchfield, Madeline Gatewood, Katie Gatiewood and Emma Oberlander finished 25th in girls' 200-yard medley relay preliminaries and did not advance to the final (1:59.37).

Isaac Tonges, Xavier Moore, Cole Janzoe and Luke Gardner finished 19th in the boys' 200-yard medley relay and did not advance to the final (1:45.44).

Madeline Gatewood finished tied for 28th in the girls' 200-yard freestyle and did not advance to the final (2:02.09).

Moore finished 25th in the boys' 200-yard individual medley and did not advance to the finals. (2:04.45). Clay Lewis finished 26th (2:05.00).

In the girls' 100-yard butterfly, Katie Gatewood placed 35th in the preliminary round (1:02.25) and did not advance.

Luke Gardner placed 16th in the boys' 100-yard freestyle (49.86). Gardner broke the school record in the preliminary round with a time of 49.03.

Luke Gardner, Riley Gardner, Tonges and Lewis finished 28th in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.43).

Crutchfield finished 16th in the girls' 100-yard backstroke (1:00.87). Crutchfield posted a time of 59.97 in the preliminary round.

Moore finished 23rd in the boys' 100-yard backstroke preliminary round (56.79) and did not advance. Lewis (58.53) was 32nd.

Cole Janzoe finished 19th in the boys 100-yard breaststroke preliminary round 1:02.03) and did not advance.

Olivia Damm, Crutchfield, Madeline Gatewood and Katie Gatewood finished 31st in the girls' 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.29).

Lewis, Janzow, Gardner and Moore finished second in the consolation final and 10th overall in the boys' 400-yard freestyle relay (3:20.94).
