Midway softball sweeps twinbill from Brescia for two RSC wins

The Midway University softball team earned its first two River States Conference victories of the season on Friday, March 16, when the Lady Eagles swept a doubleheader from Brescia University at William G. Clark Memorial Field.

The Eagles scored in the first three innings of the opener, while holding the Bearcats (2-6, 0-4 RSC) to just two runs in a 10-2 run-rule win in five innings. Then in the second game, Midway put up 10 more runs en route to a 10-6 victory.

Following the results of last week, the Eagles move to 8-11 overall and 2-2 in RSC play.

In the first game, the Eagles plated five runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third, while they got a solid start from Hannah Poynter in the circle for the 10-2 run-rule win. The Midway junior tossed five innings allowing two unearned runs on five hits. She also fanned five.

Offensively, the Eagles got a big day from Dee Lewis. She went two for two at the plate with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Kelsey Gravens, Aliyah Johnson and Lynsie Clark all added a double apiece, while Gravens collected two RBI and Johnson and Clark had one RBI each.

Marissa Walker added an RBI and three runs scored, while Carly Benz and Jasmine Jordan pitched in with one RBI apiece. Kendall Horn also scored one run in the win.

Then in the nightcap, with the game tied 5-5 after three complete innings, the Eagles plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth as they held on for the 10-6 victory.

Hannah Poynter picked up her second win of the day for the Eagles. She tossed the final four innings allowing one run on seven hits. Alyssa Yates started the game and pitched the first three frames. She allowed five runs – one earned – on seven hits.

Jeri Bogard and Alyssa Yates led the way offensively for Midway with two hits apiece. Bogard had a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Yates added a solo home run and two runs scored. Marissa Walker added three RBI and a run and Dee Lewis had an RBI and a run scored.

Midway is back in action at home on March 30-31 when they host Asbury University and Miami – Hamilton. The Eagles host Asbury at 2 p.m. on March 30, while hosting Miami – Hamilton at 1 p.m. on March 31.
