Midway men’s tennis records first-ever RSC victory in shutout of Ohio Christian

The Midway University men’s tennis team made history on Saturday, March 24, when the Eagles picked up their first River States Conference victory in program history by defeating Ohio Christian University.The Eagles swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Midway then clinched the match at 5-0 after picking up straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Eagles are now 4-6 overall and 1-0 in league play.The duo of Julian Lopez and Hugo Retortillo got the Eagles off to a good start with a win at No. 1 doubles. Lopez and Retortillo made quick work of Colin Dorman and Damon Foster with an 8-1 win giving Midway the 1-0 lead.Just a few minutes later, the lead expanded to 2-0 after Jacob Sergent and Stephen Pueterbaugh picked up an 8-2 victory over Ronald Hayes and Dylan Wilkerson at No. 2 doubles.Midway made it a clean sweep of doubles action after a win at No.3 doubles. The freshman duo of Jacob Franke and Dustin Johnson earned an 8-5 win over Nathan Gaines and Samuel Diggs.In singles play, Lopez and Retortillo won in straight sets to clinch the match. Lopez was up first and won 6-0 and 6-0 over Colin Dorman at number one singles, while Retortillo also won 6-0 and 6-0 over Damon Foster at No.2 singles to clinch the match by a final score of 5-0.When the match was clinched, Pueterbaugh was up a set at No. 3 singles, while Sergent and Franke were up in the first set at No.4 and 5 singles, respectively. Johnson’s match against Samuel Diggs never got started at No. 6 singles.After traveling to Saint Louis College of the Pharmacy on Saturday, March 31, the Eagles will host the University of the Cumberlands on Monday, April 2, at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
