Midway men’s tennis wins over St. Louis College of Pharmacy

The Midway University men’s tennis team returned to the courts on Friday, March 30, when the Eagles traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy in a non-conference match.

The Eagles sealed their third straight victory in a 9-0 sweep of the Eutectics to get back to .500 at 6-6 overall. Midway swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in the win.

As has been the case in the win streak, the Eagles got more strong doubles play where they surrendered just two games over the three matches.

Jacob Franke and Dustin Johnson got the Eagles off to a good start in doubles play with an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 over Mensur Koso and Zuan Le.

Midway then got a pair of 8-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Julian Lopez and Hugo Retortillo took down Luke Winchester and Clark Berry at No. 1, while Stephen Pueterbaugh and Jacob Sergent defeated Kyle Bai and Naphtali Eke at No. 2.

The strong doubles play would carry over to singles action. Freshman Julian Lopez blanked Luke Winchester in straight sets at No.1 singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Then at No. 6 singles, Dustin Johnson clinched the match for the Eagles. The freshman would win 6-1 and 6-1 over Zuan Le to make the score 5-0.

Following the win at No. 6 singles was straight set victories at No. 5, No.2 and No. 3 singles. Jacob Franke won 6-0, 6-1 over Mensur Koso at No. 5, Hugo Retortillo defeated Clark Berry by finals of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 2, while Stephen Pueterbaugh won 6-1, 6-0 over Kyle Bai at No. 3.

The final point in the match would be decided at No. 4 singles. Jacob Sergent and Naphtali Eke would split the first two sets as the match was decided on a super tiebreaker. Sergent went on to win the tiebreaker, 10-4, to clinch the 9-0 sweep for the Eagles.

Midway is back in action on Friday, April 6, when they Eagles travel to Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind. Then on April 7, they travel to Indiana University East in Richmond, Ind.
