Bat Jackets rally in extra innings win at Anderson County
The Bearcats scored five runs (one earned) on WCHS sophomore Kyle Sims who started the game. Sims went an inning and a third allowing three hits and a walk.
The Jackets scoring began in the top of the fifth when WCHS junior Charlie Corum hit a two-run home run over the left field fence. The Jackets then scored three runs on a pair of singles by WCHS senior Hunter Hilbert and junior Leo Guadagni.
The Bearcats responded with a pair of runs on three singles in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 10-5.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bat Jackets loaded the bases with no outs. WCHS junior Griffin Blankenship hit a two-run double to right field to cut the deficit to three. Hilbert hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in one run. Guadagni flied out to right field to bring the Jackets within one out of losing the game. WCHS junior Ben Browning then walked to load the bases, and Corum walked to cut the deficit to one run. WCHS senior Josh Hall singled in the tying run.
WCHS senior Joseph Sutherland struck out a pair of Bearcat batters in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Four Woodford batters were hit by pitches in the top of the eighth inning and singles by Corum, Hilbert and senior Bryce Sheets drove in eight runs.
The Bearcats scored one run in the bottom of the eighth on a passed ball, but the Jackets held on for the win.
The Woodford County High School baseball team went undefeated in five games in Cocoa, Fla., at the Cocoa Expo. The Bat Jackets played teams from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.
The Jackets won by mercy rule for the second time in a week over Cleveland Heights (Ohio). The Bat Jackets won 18-5 in five innings.
WCHS junior Spencer Nauert started the game on the mound for the Jackets. He went three innings, surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out three.
WCHS senior Josh Hall was three for four at the plate and drove in a pair of runs. Corum had three RBI in the game for the Bat Jackets. Blankenship was three for four with three RBI. The Bat Jackets had four stolen bases in the game.
The Bat Jackets defeated the Muhlenberg County Mustangs 8-2 on Thursday, April 5. Hilbert picked up the win for the Jackets going six and a third innings, surrendering two runs on nine hits.
The Mustangs scored a run in the top of the first on a triple and single. Hilbert also walked a batter, but got out of the jam with a ground out to second base.
The Jackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and scored when Hall and senior Sam Flora walked in a pair of runs. The Jackets added two more runs on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead . Hall drove in two more runs in the bottom of the second when he singled to right field. Flora hit a line drive to right field to extend the lead to 7-1. Blankenship drove in Woodford's final run of the game to make the score 8-1.
Hall led the Bat Jackets with three RBI. Flora and Blankenship each added a pair of RBI.
Woodford defeated Viera High School (Florida) 7-1 on Wednesday, April 4.
WCHS senior Collin Murray got the start for the Bat Jackets. He pitched seven innings, allowing one run and striking out five batters.
The Jackets scored the first run of the game in the top of the third when Flora singled past the shortstop to score Gudagni. WCHS sophomore Skyelar Johnson doubled to left center field and drove in a pair of runs. WCHS juniors Ben Browning and Charlie Corum each added an RBI in the top of the fourth inning to extend the Jacket lead to five runs.
The Jackets added their sixth run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Sheets. Corum singled in the top of the sixth to extend the Woodford lead to 7-0.
Viera scored a run in bottom of the sixth but Wheeler closed the door on the rally with strike out stranding a pair of runners on base. In the bottom of the seventh, Wheeler got three outs on ground balls to end the game. Johnson and Corum led WCHS with two RBI each.
The Bat Jackets won 17-2 in three innings over Ambassador Christian Academy (West Virginia) on Tuesday, April 3.
Woodford was led by Corum who was three for three with a pair of RBI in the game. Flora was two for two with three RBI. The Jackets had 11 hits in the game but walked six times and had 14 stolen bases. Hilbert, sophomore Noah Branham and Nauert each pitched an inning for the Bat Jackets.
The Bat Jackets won by mercy rule over Cleveland Heights High School (Ohio) on Monday, April 2. Sims was terrific on the mound for Woodford. He gave up only one run in five innings, while striking out eight. Guadagni, Corum and Pictor each had a pair of hits for the Bat Jackets. Flora led all batters with two RBI. The Jackets stole 10 bases in the game, with four batters hit by a pitch.
