Midway men’s tennis picks up non-conference victory over Berea

In a late addition to their schedule, the Midway University men’s tennis team traveled to Berea, Kentucky on Friday, April 13, to take on Berea College in a non-conference matchup.

The Eagles got strong doubles play across the board as they won all three doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Joe Reyes’ team went on to win four of the six singles matches to come away with the 7-2 victory over the Mountaineers.

The team of freshman, Julian Lopez and junior, Hugo Retortillo helped get the Eagles off to a strong start when they blanked their opponents at No. 1 doubles. Lopez and Retortillo won 8-0 over Michael Malpartida and Avery Matthews.

Shortly after the completion of No. 1 doubles, play was wrapping up at No. 3 doubles. The freshman duo of Jacob Sergent and Dustin Johnson defeated Issac Domenech and Seth Carrol by a final score of 8-4.

The lead ballooned to 3-0 after Stephen Pueterbaugh teamed with Jacob Franke and won at No. 2 doubles. Pueterbaugh and Franke won, 9-7, over Dakota Massucco and Sam Slater.

The Mountaineers would win two singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6 thanks to a pair of third set super tiebreakers, but Midway would need to win just two singles matches in order to clinch the match. The Eagles did just that as they won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.

Lopez won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Michael Malpartida, Retortillo won 6-0, 6-1 over Dakota Massucco at No. 2 singles, Sergent won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles over Sam Slater, while Franke capped off the 7-2 win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Brandon Mitchell at No. 5 singles.

The Eagles will now turn their attention to the River States Conference Tournament which is set for April 27-28 in Mason, Ohio.
