Mabel Waits Carter, 87, of Henderson, formerly of Versailles, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Lucy Smith King Care Center.
Born in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Barnett and Ethel Waits. She was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Lexington Business College. She attended Clear Creek Baptist Church and worked for 40 years in Frankfort as a state employee.
Survivors include a brother, Russell Waits; a niece, Alice (John) Bassett and family; a nephew, Johnny (Charlet) Ethington and family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. “Billy” Carter; five sisters, Lucille “Jimmie” Jacobs, Martha Ethington and her husband, J.T. Ethington Jr., Jane and Marjorie “Puzzy” Waits and Peggy Flora; a brother, Tommy Waits and his wife, Carolyn; and sister-in-law, Nancy Waits.
Services were conducted Monday, April 23, at Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home, by Bro. Steve Hinkle. Pallbearers were John Ethington IV, Adam Farley, J.T. Farley, Billy McIntyre, Kevin Waits, Donald Waits, Lindsey Flora Jr. and Jimmy Tate. Honorary pallbearers were Roger DeVore and Pat Kirsch. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
