Direct seeding, transplanting, and field management field day

The University of Kentucky Organic Farming Unit will hold a field day May 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 4321 Emmert Farm Lane.

Learning to recognize optimal soil conditions, identify healthy seedlings, prepare planting beds, and follow up with irrigation, plant protection, and weed control are keys to success in transplanting and direct seeding.

Kristi Durbin and Mark Williams will share the standard operating procedures used on UK’s Organic Farming Unit (developed over decades of diversified farming) and provide a “show and tell” of the techniques, machinery, hand tools, & bed preparation used in their production.

Among the topics covered:

• Why is it necessary to consider root-to-soil and seed-to-soil contact? And soil tilth?

• How do you best prepare plasticulture/landscape fabric beds, and how does that differ from bare ground?

• What are the tradeoffs / benefits of direct seeding some plants and transplanting others?

• When would you seed / transplant by hand rather than using equipment?

• What’s the best use of smaller-scale push seeders vs. larger-scale vacuum planters?

This Organic Association of Kentucky Field Day will address these questions and those posed by participants to provide a rich understanding of the seed/seedling transition to a healthy, productive mature plant. Geared toward production farmers who are scaling-up and/or transitioning to Certified Organic. The UK Organice Farming Unit has been growing and selling certified organic fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs for over ten years. Field Day cost is $5 for OAK Members; $10 non-members. Registration is recommended.
