Scott Hawkins began his tenure as Woodford County Schools superintendent last week.

A jury on July 1 found former Versailles attorney Melbourne Mills not guilty of taking millions from his former clients in a $200 million fen-phen settlement.

Gary Wayne Wooten, a former Versailles insurance agent previously convicted of defrauding his clients, faces new charges. The indictment alleges that on four occasions Wooten unlawfully obtained money from two individuals “by creating a false impression as to his intent in regard to the money.”

Juvier Garcia and Rafael Mercenario, Versailles residents, drowned Sunday, July 6, at the Kentucky River Lock and Dam #6 at the end of Oregon Road.

Hundreds showed up at the Woodford County Fairgrounds on the humid early evening of July 4.

Karley Mohler has been appointed to succeed Timothy Southers, who took the same position at Culver Stockton College, as the Eagles’ women’s basketball coach.

Former University of Kentucky All-American Brooke Patterson Stickel has been appointed to coach the Woodford County High School boys’ and girls’ cross country squads in the fall.

Colvin Patterson Rouse, 89, prominent attorney and banker, long associated with the United Bank and Trust Co. here, died Saturday, July 3.

Virginia Perros Allen, 75, Woodford County’s longtime public health nurse, died Thursday, July l.

Charles O. Dawson has retired after a 42-year career in education. He was a former principal of Versailles High School and Woodford County High School, and later served as assistant superintendent of the school district.

A barn fire on actor William Shatner’s Belle Reve Farm Tuesday killed five horses.

Kimberly Hudson of Versailles was named to the dean’s list at William Woods University, Fulton, Mo.

Danielle Drayer was named Young Miss Woodford County Fair on June 24.

Thoroughbred horse trainer MacKenzie “Mack” Miller of Versailles will be inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame on Aug. 23.

The Corner Store on the site of the former Corner Drug opened for business on July l.

July 6, 1978

Linda Nave, who has directed the Woodford County Senior Citizens Center since its inception in October 1973, will resign at the end of July.

Ben Crain has been elected chairman of the board of directors at Woodford Memorial Hospital. Brenda Kemper is vice chairman and Gary Gillis is secretary-treasurer.

An “alarming” use of water by the South Woodford County Water District was discussed during a meeting last Thursday of the Versailles City Council. The district had used 7.7 million gallons of water during the past month, although it has a contract with the city not to exceed 5 million gallons per month.

A “health spa for horses,” the Bluegrass Equine Therapy Center, was dedicated during groundbreaking ceremonies for the center’s swimming pool for horses Friday morning at a site on Shannon Run Road and U.S. 60.

Woodford Countians Henry J. Cecil Jr. and Raymond Roberson were named to the dean’s list at Xavier University for the spring semester.

Nancy Presley of Woodford County received a degree in art at Berea College’s recent commencement exercises.

Hallie Gay Walden of Midway recently graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College.
