Woodford Lakes Golf Club set to open Aug. 3

WOODFORD LAKES Golf Club may not have any true lakes, but it does feature three large ponds and two smaller ones. Behind this pond are the 1st green on the left and the 8th green on the right. General Manager Derek Lowe said during the extensive clean-up and renovation of the former Cabin Brook Golf Club course (also known as The Brook), the front and back nine holes were switched. The golf course formerly known as Cabin Brook Golf Club not only has a new name but a tee time for reopening.

Woodford Lakes Golf Club will open Friday, Aug. 3. The property is owned by Frontier Nursing University, but will be managed by the Davey Tree Expert Company, a tree company that also manages more than 30 golf courses in Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Florida.

“We’re still getting some bridges redone … just letting some grass grow, getting some grass on the fairways. But other than that, we’re trying to get electric in the clubhouse, which should be coming Thursday (today, July 19), then just moving everything over to the clubhouse,” said Derek Howe, general manager of the course.

Howe said by the time his company got involved last year, weeds were four feet high, and workers were engaged in a type of search with which most golfers can identify.

“Greens were nonexistent – we actually had to find them. The superintendent I have down here… was down here probably in August, and they were just driving their trucks trying to find greens. They were in pretty rough shape, so we redid the greens,” Howe said. “The majority of them look really good.”

Howe said the new name was suggested by the president of Frontier Nursing University during a drive around the course.

Howe said the 18-hole public course will have a par of 72, with distances ranging from a little more than 7,000 yards to a little more than 4,800 yards from the forward tees. There will be four tee boxes on each hole.

Prices haven’t been announced yet, but, a little more than two weeks from opening the course, Howe said there’s already a buzz about it on their Facebook page and website, www.woodfordlakesgolfclub.com.

“Every day that we’re working up front, we have multiple people pulling into the driveway, wondering when we’re opening. So it’s good to finally announce that we’re opening,” Howe said.
