WCHS to host alumni soccer game
The Woodford County High School boys' and girls' soccer teams will host their first annual co-ed alumni soccer game at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 at Community Stadium in Versailles. The event is co-ed, and both teams encourage all players from the past to sign up and participate, according to WCHS girls' soccer coach Sara Thornton.
"All Woodford County boys and girls soccer alumni are encouraged to come to play or volunteer or even hang out and watch," said Thornton. " We are providing a t-shirt to each alumnus who signs up and will provide a potluck dinner after the game. "
The fee is $25, and the money will go to a general fund for supplies for both teams over the course of the season. The money raised could pay for uniforms, practice equipment or team camps ,according to Thornton. The coordinators are currently seeking sponsorships from local businesses to be added to the game t-shirt.
“The alumni game is important to me because it gives our alumni an opportunity to come back and see what we’re up to as a program and hopefully they can connect with one or two current players as well and help mentor them in whatever ventures they choose to pursue after college, said WCHS boys’ soccer coach Fonyam Atanga. “As most, if not all alumni are aware, high school sports are not funded by the school, so it’s important that we take whatever initiatives we can to raise much needed funds that we can use towards providing meals for the players before away games, buying equipment and uniforms and things of that nature. We welcome any type of support from our alumni and the Woodford County community as well.” Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to contact Sara Thornton email@example.com or Fonyam Atanga firstname.lastname@example.org.
