Mary Wilson West, 67, died July 24, 2018.
She was the daughter of Martha Adams Wilson and the late James D. Wilson, a Carroll County native, and graduated with a BS degree from the University of Kentucky. She resided at Millford Farm in Woodford County with her husband Robert S. West Jr. She began her career at LEX18 as the Lexington television market’s first female account executive in 1981. She became local sales manager in 1991 and was promoted to General Sales Manager in 1994 – again the first female to hold that position in the Lexington market. Mrs. West was additionally appointed as vice-president of sales in 1998, and retired in 2015 after 33 years with the station. She was not only a driving force in LEX18’s success, but also an active leader in the community. She served multiple terms on advisory boards for the Lexington Advertising Club, The Lafayette Club, and “The Blast” charity event. She was named Woman of the Year by the Leukemia Association, and while on the Salvation Army’s Advisory Board, she helped feed over 300,000 people through the “Mountain of Love” and raised over $370,000 for homeless children during her tenure and later served on the Advisory Committee for The Woman’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East. In later years, she worked to encourage greater involvement by both local and national media in the horse industry.
In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include a son, William C. Broberg II; a granddaughter, Lucy Broberg, both of Seattle, Washington; a step-daughter, Claire West, Berkeley, CA; a sister, Patricia (George) Drake, Louisville; and a nephew, Adam Drake, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Services were held Monday, July 30, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd., led by Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper. Burial followed in Midway Cemetery.
